Whatever happened to Calico Joe? It began quietly enough with a pulled hamstring. The first baseman for the Cubs AAA affiliate in Wichita went down as he rounded third and headed for home. The next day, Jim Hickman, the first baseman for the Cubs, injured his back. The team suddenly needed someone to play first, so they reached down to their AA club in Midland, Texas, and called up a 21-year-old named Joe Castle. He was the hottest player in AA and creating a buzz....

Great book with a baseball theme. You don't need to love baseball but a bit of knowledge on how the game is played would help. I enjoy books that are about interesting people and families, we can all learn fron these type of stories. This one teaches us that the love from a parent is not guaranteed, and that respect is something that is earned.

I listened to this about 2 weeks ago and had to sit here awhile to remind myself what it was about again. Not a memorable story at all. Not bad, just not anything to recommend. Glad it was a free short story.

The reader did a fantastic job on this one. I felt the character of the book was really talking to me. As my title suggests, I did enjoy this book, but I'm not sure I understand it. I felt like there was a lot of symbolism being used and that I just didn't get it. Made me feel a bit ignorant I have to admit. I think it may be one of those books that you can read anything into it depending on your background and beliefs. Can't wait to find someone else who has read it so we can discuss. An excellent book for a book club. A bit graphic at times to the point where I don't want to see the movie, I'd probably have to shut my eyes at times.

Read it so we can talk about it please.

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is back. The brassy babe in the powder blue Buick has been given the unpopular task of finding Mo Bedemier, Trenton's most beloved citizen, arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, gone no-show for his court appearance. Once again, the entire One for the Money crew is in action, searching for Mo, tripping down a trail littered with dead drug dealers, leading Stephanie to suspect Mo may be in over his head.

The story started out poorly for me as I did not care for the narrator. The tone and sound of the voice did not suit the character and it threw me off. There was nothing about it that kept me wanting to hear more. I finished it as I usually dol even though I may not care for the book. The story line felt immature to me, nothing challenging about it at all. I've read a few of Janet's books before and thoroughly enjoyed them. Would not recommend this one.

Jack Reacher reunites with the survivors of his old Army investigative team, scrambling to raise the living, bury the dead, and connect the dots in a mystery that is growing darker by the day. Another great Jack Reacher story. The story was a bit complicated and as usual you could not predict the outcome. There were a couple of scenes that were somewhat unbelievable and I did find myself thinking "there is no way anyone would come to that conclusion". Doesn't matter though, it was still a good book.

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack is a letter addressed to Harold from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person.

Loved this book, well written and well performed. While listening I felt I was back in England where I recently visited. I could picture everything Harold saw while on his pilgrimage. The best part was my surprise for the reason for the pilgrimage. Listen and you will be as well.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". In this holiday-themed short story, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson, follow the trail of a lost hat and a Christmas goose through the streets of London and into a rapidly expanding mystery.
