Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: "You got the wrong guy". Then he says: "Get Reacher for me". And sure enough, from the world he lives in - no phone, no address, no commitments - ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child's astonishing thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything - about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot - and by doing so gives Jack Reacher one shot at the truth.

I am a Lee Child/Jack Reacher fan, but this one was not the best. The characters were a bit lackluster, and the story tended to wander. Lee Childs' knowledge of the details that lead to the solution of a complicated set-up are impressive, and, as in all the books, they make me wonder how many incompetent law professionals, like the ones that Reacher shows up every time, actually exist. I will not be deterred from continuing with the Reacher series. And as long as Dick Hill continues to narrate and be the voice of Jack Reacher, the stories will stay interesting enough for me to continue listening.

Craig Johnson's mystery stories have earned him an esteemed position in the pantheon of contemporary crime novelists. In this fourth installment, Longmire is called to investigate a dead Vietnamese girl found along the Wyoming highway.

I didn't think the Longmire series would be for me, but gave A Cold Dish a try, and I was hooked. The characters are great offering some dead pan humor. The story was interesting, switching from present to Longmire's time in View Nam. Sometimes when a book switches venues often, it's hard to follow, but this wasn't. Everything in the Viet Nam segments applied directly to what was going on in the main story. If you're looking for fast moving, on the edge of your seat, this isn't it. But if you like a good mystery with interesting characters, I recommend this.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

I read another review (sorry - I wish I remember who wrote it) that said, If you are a dog lover, this is the book for you. That's what drew me to this book and I was not disappointed! As well as being an engaging story, well written and excellently narrated, the dogs in the story were treated with respect, even admired. Robert Crais showed a love of dogs as well as thorough knowledge of their behavior. I loved this book and I know I will listen to it again.

Between avoiding the FBI and their moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Lieutenant Jacqueline Daniels and her binge-eating partner Herb must catch a frightening maniac who calls himself "The Gingerbread Man" before he kills again...and Jack is next on his murder list.

This was my first J.A. Konrath/Jack Daniels. It was a decent story, entertaining, and I might read (note: read not listen to) another one, but frankly, Susie Breck's performance detracted from the listen for me. Her voice was grating, and she tended to overact. Dick Hill was great as usual. I think I could listen to him read the phone book and find it entertaining. I might recommend this to someone if they were able to get it on sale.
