It was exciting. I found myself sitting in the driveway trying to finish a chapter in my car.
Pender--flawed, but interesting.
Ballerini is now in my top three narrators--the others being Scott Brick and Dick Hill. A great find!
The ending was sad, but just and inevitable!
I was really looking forward to James Sheehan's next book, having read or listened to the first couple. It's worth a listen, but be prepared to deal with and suspend belief in the behavior of the "saintly" characters. Some of it is a real stretch, especially considering people have their lives on the line.
The Perry Mason-type ending was both predictable and unrealistic. I found myself thinking, "Here it comes!", then, "Oh no! He actually went through with it!!!!" More suitable for Days of Our Lives than for one of Mr. Sheehan's books.
His voice is very listenable. Does a nice job with the different characters.
Yes, write this review.
The book started out as a mystery, with a supposed kidnapping, but it turned out to be an excellent courtroom drama. The book and narration were both excellent, in my opinion. On one occasion, I found myself listening for about 6 hours straight while I went about my daily routine (I'm retired). Some books are long, but only just interesting enough to keep you hooked for the long run. When finished, one isn't convinced they were worth the time. Others are long, but so engrossing that one is sad to see them end. This is one of the latter!! Well done.
