It's August in New York, and the only thing that's hotter than the pavement is Manhattan D.A. Alex Cooper's professional and personal life. Just as she's claiming an especially gratifying victory in a rape case, she gets the call: the body of a young woman has been found in an abandoned building. The brutality of the murder is disturbing enough, but when a second body, beaten and disposed of in exactly same manner, is found off the Belt Parkway, the city's top brass want the killer found fast.

    Anna says: "Simply addicting!"
    "Great story....so so reader"
    Overall

I love the Alex Cooper series, but Bernadette Dunne doesn't do the book justice. Was Barbara Rosenblat otherwise engaged when this was released? Seriously, Ms. Dunne can't vary her voice to match the characters...you really have to listen carefully to figure out when one character stops talking and another one starts. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. Typically, I learned something else about the Big Apple that I didn't know before I read one of Ms. Fairstein's books. As a New Yorker, born and breed, I really love that aspect of her books.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "The best of the best!"

I usually listen to thrillers and mysteries, but this, this is so unbelievably great! The story is compelling, I have to force myself to take off my earphones and wait for my next two mile hike. I just don't want it to end, but I can't wait to find out how it ends...I am almost there, don't have much more left. The readers are absolutely superb, they have the dialect down pat. Don't hesitate, download this book!!!!!

  • Fearless Fourteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel

Personal vendettas, hidden treasure, and a monkey named Carl will send bounty hunter Stephanie Plum on her most explosive adventure yet. Dom Rizzi robbed a bank, stashed the money, and did the time. His family couldn't be more proud. He always was the smart one. Joe Morelli, Dom Rizzi, and Dom's sister, Loretta, are cousins. Morelli is a cop, Rizzi robs banks, and Loretta is a single mother waiting tables at the firehouse. The all-American family.

    Patricia says: "Laughed out loud..."
    "More fun with Stephanie"
    Overall

See, now, I don't agree that the series is getting tired, because there is alway so much character humor. I listen to the Plum series when I am exercising, it is a fun, light listening/read. I don't expect War and Peace, I expect laughter, and Evanovich never ceases to amuse me with the funny characters and their antics. I can relate to the potato canon, my son built one and I almost died laughing when he set it off and the potato probably landed on the neighboring college campus, that sucker went as high as the eye could see. What can I say, I love slapstick, even real life slapstick. I guess I simply love to laugh. I just wish her books were longer: more words, more laughs. Come on, her Jersey jokes are a hoot. And, admit it,you all want to picture Lula squeezed into a spandex wedding gown, you just know she is going to need a shoe horn to get into her dress when and if she gets married!

  • The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

PA Law says: "Haunting and beautiful tale"
    "A Jane Eyre type novel"
    Overall

I enjoyed this, it was a fairly good listen and held my interest until the end. Clearly the author loved reading Jane Eyre, was profoundly influenced by it, and set out to write a similar type book. One of the two readers is melodramatic in tone, but the reader who does Vida Winter's voice is excellent. I don't know if this is worthy of any audible awards, but it did make my time on the treadmill tolerable. I would characterize the book as pleasant, but not memorable.

Award-winning, New York Times best-selling novelist Sharyn McCrumb crafts absorbing, lyrical tales featuring the rich culture and lore of Appalachia. In the compelling The Ballad of Frankie Silver, she deftly weaves past and present with legend and truth to create a suspenseful portrait of tragic death.

Daniel says: "A nice little change of pace."
"I love fiction grounded in history"
    Overall

What a terrific audiobook. Both readers are excellent, they did a great job. It was a useful device to separate the story lines. Since the Ballad of Frankie Silver is based on a true story, I was delighted to find more information about it on the Net, including a 40 minute film based upon the story behind the ballad, produced by UNC. What a delight, there are pictures of the hamlet and the Silver cabin, which is still standing and still owned by the family. McCrumb did a wonderful job recounting the death of Frankie Silver, her research seems accurate. Then she took the story and interwove it with a modern day tale. I was sorry when I finished the book, it will be a hard act to follow. I loved being transported back to the 1830s, I felt like I was in another place and time as I listened to that portion of the book.

Lydia is a delicate British lady. Sam is a dusty Texan. When they are stranded together on bleak and dangerous Dartmoor, they must stay close to each other to survive. But this closeness creates more than safety: it leads to an indiscretion that could destroy them both.

    A says: "Well-written Regency romance"
    "Not my kind of book"
    Overall

I bought this because I love Barbara Rosenblat's narrations, especially Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody series, and Lisa Scottolini's legal thrillers. I see now that I really dislike romances, I found this dragged on and on, and was not terribly interesting.

From coast to coast and around the world, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels continue to make best-selling history each summer. In the 13th book in the series, the stakes are raised even higher as Stephanie Plum finds herself in her most dangerous, hilarious, hottest, chase yet.

Kelly says: "Same flavor, different package"
"Oh to be able to write like that!"
    Overall

I love reading or listening to the Stephanie Plum series. Janet Evanovich and I have the same sense of humor, she just makes me laugh aloud. Since I listen to books on the treadmill or walking outdoors, I get strange looks when I double up laughing for no apparent reason. I have to point to my headphones! Seriously, if you haven't tried Evanovich, give her a whirl, you can start with this one, they really don't absolutely have to be read in the order that they were written. One caution, Debi Mazur read the early ones, she is the only audio reader I couldn't listen to, I had to read the books she recorded.
