  • Devil Said Bang: Sandman Slim, Book 4

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Richard Kadrey
    • Narrated By MacLeod Andrews
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

What do you do after you’ve escaped Hell, gone back, uncovered the true nature of God, and then managed to become the new Lucifer? Well, if you’re James Stark, you have to figure out how to run Hell while also trying to get back out of it... again. Plus there’s the small matter of surviving. Because everyone in Heaven, Hell, and in between wants to be the fastest gun in the universe, and the best way to do so is to take down Lucifer, a.k.a. James Stark.

Steven says: "Not the best Sandman Slim book, but it was ok."
"A satisfying continuation of a great series..."
Where does Devil Said Bang rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Devil Said Bang picks up a few months after Aloha From Hell ends. I didn't do it, but I suspect it's more satisfying if you read Devil in the Dollhouse (book 3.5) before you grab Devil Said Bang. In any case, it's more of the same Stark and supporting characters you've come to love and expect. Witty banter, plenty of entertaining metaphors to paint the Sandman Slim universe, and a plot that moves well make this book a fun, gritty, and downright blasphemous good time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Devil Said Bang?

I really enjoy the direction and depth that Stark's relationship with Candy is taking. When she pops open the box-turned-rifle and immediately tries to shoot it, Stark says 'that's why I didn't load it'. That was a moment where I felt both characters totally got one another.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

The variety of voices he's able to find and their accuracy to how the characters are written.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    A helluva good time.

    Any additional comments?

Love this series so far! I would like to see a little more into the mythology behind what it takes to receive 'salvation' in the Sandman Slim universe. I mean, ultimately if anyone deserves it, it's Stark.

  • Les Misérables: Translated by Julie Rose

    • UNABRIDGED (60 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Victor Hugo, Julie Rose (translator)
    • Narrated By George Guidall

One of the great classics of world literature and the inspiration for the most beloved stage musical of all time, Les Misérables is legendary author Victor Hugo’s masterpiece. This extraordinary English version by renowned translator Julie Rose captures all the majesty and brilliance of Hugo’s work. Here is the timeless story of the quintessential hunted man—Jean Valjean—and the injustices, violence, and social inequalities that torment him.

    Darwin8u says: "!"
    "A complete epic"
Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

I really liked the way Gavroche was done.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did both. I laughed at the buffoonery of some of the characters at times, but I cried far more, especially at the end.

    Any additional comments?

What an amazing and epic tale, from top to bottom. Sorrow and woe, hope and bravery, love, hate, despicable people, saints on earth... It has the power to change/shift your perspective on relating to people and life, if you allow it to. Highly recommended.
