  • The Barefoot Executive: The Ultimate Guide to Being Your Own Boss and Achieving Financial Freedom

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Carrie Wilkerson
    • Narrated By Carrie Wilkerson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Don't think you have what it takes to run a business? It's time to reconsider. Carrie Wilkerson offers the opportunity to live life on your terms. Want to start your workday with e-mail and coffee on the back patio? Want the flexibility of joining your fourth grader on an all-day field trip? Are you ready to take that vacation you’ve been planning for years? Then you have a choice to make, and The Barefoot Executive will help jump-start your transition. You’ll learn: Your “why.” The most important question.

David says: "Where is the substance?"
"Worth reading but not what I expected..."

I wouldn't call it the ultimate guide to anything other than Carrie Wilkerson self promotion. However I do think it was worth the money. This review may seem harsh but keep reading to the end to understand my point.

The book is not a straight road-map from business idea to creation to profit. She presents ideas and concepts in a non-linear fashion and often repeats herself. The repetition of ideas is very common in self-help/biz development books so I expected it. What I didn't expect was the shameless self promotion.

She mentions her 100lb weight loss, adopted kids, mountains of debt, professional contacts (Zig Ziglar, etc) a lot! Her story is very inspiring! I applaud her will, dedication and commitment to success. However, rather than hearing about all of the things she had to overcome, I'd like to hear HOW she overcame them. I was expecting a more in depth discussion about how she built her business, the hurdles, the successes, the choices, etc. She briefly mentions her first business and extensively covers how her current business can help us reach new heights but never peels back the curtain.

I'm always leery about authors/speakers/teachers who make their living from teaching people how to make money. I find it a bit disingenuous for people who've never built a business outside of the "make money online" industry to claim to be able to help people how to make money outside of this industry. I don't think that describes Carrie 100%. I think she used the steps she outlines in this book to grow her business to the point where she expanded in to this industry. However, I wish she would have spent more time talking about THAT part of her growth.

Every chapter references how her current business and products can help us do the things she is teaching us to do. It is clear that the book is a marketing vehicle for her business. And for that reason I wanted to give this book 1 star. However, after listening objectively and ignoring the self promotion, I definitely see the value in the book.

This book is great for someone who is considering getting in to business for themselves and is not sure how or why. The action steps she gives will help you get an idea of what YOU can do to build a business that you are good at and care about.

It is not technical, so it is great for beginners and not so great for experienced business owners. There are a few insights for current biz owners but I think the greatest value in this book is in finding, evaluating and starting your business idea.

This book gave me ideas that will allow me to make 100 times the cost of the book within the next 6 months, so it was definitely worth reading. However, It could have been a 2 hour book without all the self-promotion and marketing, but then she wouldn't be following her own advice from the last chapter.

I prefer books that give the history of a business or CEO and talks about the tactics, ideas and tools they used to start and grow their business. (see Tony Hsieh, Steve Jobs, Starbucks, etc)

READ THIS BOOK but take notes so you don't have to go through it again.

  • Mockingjay: The Final Book of The Hunger Games

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Suzanne Collins
    • Narrated By Carolyn McCormick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena live, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge....

"I hate fiction books but I loved this!"

I generally only listen to or read non-fiction. Stories just don't keep me entertained. This series did more than keep me sucked me in! Book 1 was the best, book 2 was less engaging but thoroughly entertaining, book 3 was thrilling! Not sure how I feel about the ending though. I don't know how I wanted it to end so I can't say the ending was bad but after the roller coaster ride of this series I feel like the coaster just slowly pulled back into station instead of barreling to a screeching halt like I expected.

    "Great story, well told"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was very entertaining to listen to because it was told in an engaging manner. While keeping me entertained, I learned about successful businesses as well. One of the best business books I've read in a long time. Great mix of entertainment and learning. Must read...err listen.

  • Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System Practiced by Top Salespeople

    • ABRIDGED (1 hr and 25 mins)
    • By Brian Tracy
    • Narrated By Brian Tracy

Strategy, tactics, and mental preparedness separate superior salespeople from the average, and with technological advances evening the competition, the selling edge is now more important than ever. Drawing on his own successful sales career and on his extensive experience as a sales consultant and seminar leader, Brian Tracy has developed the most comprehensive and effective approach to selling ever created.

    Brad says: "Great"

I would give it 1 star but I reserve 1 stars for books I don't even finish. This was my first experience with Brian Tracy. I've worked in Medical Sales for the last 5 years and I was looking for some new ideas or techniques to improve my craft. This was sales 101...actually it was high school level. I haven't read many books on sales but this was common sense stuff. It's super short so that's good but not worth the hour and a half.

One example is of a guy who was a poor sales performer and decided to become a top performer so he studied the top performers and started dressing like them. Once he started dressing like them, he became a top performer. A book on "Advanced" sales strategies doesn't need to spend 1/10th of the time talking about how to dress for success...that's elementary.

  • The TenX Rule: The Only Difference Between Success and Failure

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Grant Cardone
    • Narrated By Grant Cardone

Extreme success, by definition, lies beyond the realm of normal action. If you want to achieve extreme success, you can’t operate like everybody else and settle for mediocrity. You need to remove luck and chance from your business equation, and lock in massive success. The 10X Rule shows you how!

Michael says: "Very hyped push strategy"
    "Good not great"

I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. It is motivational...surprise, that's what he does. There is nothing revolutionary in this book. The premise is simple. Work hard...10x harder than everyone else around you and you will dominate them. The argument has it's flaws as he suggests doing nothing is just as much work as working 10x harder. That part didn't make sense to me. However the book got me excited and motivated to set better goals and work harder to reach those outrageous goals. I liked it but didn't love it. Also, his pronunciation of some words does get annoying. Impartent is not a word...

If you need a shot in the arm or a kick in the butt...listen to it. If you are looking for something new, skip it.
