This was a wonderful story. I liked the characters, the twists and turns, and I was always surprised.
I started to listen to this story on a 3 day road trip home with a friend who has never listened to audiobooks. She complained at first that there was too much detail. She was into the story by the time we got home (but had just finished the first part - of four) and she was hooked. Myself, I didn't think anything was too long or drawn out. The inner thinking of Theo was necessary, and the descriptions draw you in and make you wonder how he will cope or get out of his latest predicament. It even drew you into the story more. I was sorry when the story ended. I also loved that it centres around a real painting by a real artist and the facts of his life and death in the novel are true. Made it more special.
David Pittu does an excellent job with all the voices and the accents. It was a joy to listen to Boris, his friend and Hobie. He gives them such character and warmth. I loved Hobie from the moment he started speaking. I love reading, but this was a joy to listen to. My Russian accent wouldn't be half as good!
I wouldn't, the name of the story is perfect as it all revolves around the painting of the same name.
I just finished it this morning and was looking up to see if Donna Tartt has written any other novels and saw that she just won a Pulitzer for this story. A well deserved honour for her. It's the best book I've read in a while. Don't read the review on Wikipedia. They give the whole story away. I had no idea when I started listening, what it was about (I'd bought it a month before) and it was a joy to discover it as I went along.
As always, Terry pratchett novels catch you right from the start. Dodger is no exception. The Narrator is great with the variety of voices and the story-line itself is so different from what you may expect. Oliver springs to mind, but, you can discard that idea straight away.
I have loved every moment of this book! I notice that others have mentioned swearing, but either I'm getting immune or it just felt it made sense with the story. I would definitely recommend this book and I'm looking out for his others. I love when I laugh out loud and this happened often here.
