Joe Trona is scarred in more ways than one. Rescued from an orphanage by Will Trona, a charismatic Orange County politician who sensed his dark potential, Joe is swept into the maelstrom of power and intimidation that surrounds his adoptive father's illustrious career. Serving as Will's right hand man, Joe is trained to protect and defend his father's territory - but he can't save the powerful man from his enemies.

I really liked this book. It was very well-written - LOVED Parker's prose. Great story told well. I did figure out the ending before we got there, but that just made me feel clever. Maybe Parker's intention all along.

It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned; the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband, and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

What would have made The Paying Guests better?

Have something happen in the first five hours - I couldn't get further than that.

What could Sarah Waters have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Introduce a little bit of drama. Something. Anything.

What three words best describe Juliet Stevenson’s performance?

    It was okay.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Paying Guests?

    The graphic sex scenes. Ew.

    Any additional comments?

I was five hours into this book and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAD HAPPENED!! Also, wish that I'd read the reviews that warned of graphic sex descriptions. Those are bad enough to read - but seriously creepy when you are forced to listen to them. I could possibly have gotten through this book if something had happened other than listening to the boarders walk around on the upper floor. First book I've ever returned. It was that bad.

This is the best way I've ever found to learn a language! I am in front of a computer all day long and it is the LAST thing I want to do in my free time. I listen to Pimsleur for 30 minutes on my way to work and again on my way home. I just returned from Brazil a few weeks ago and I can attest to the fact that this method REALLY DOES WORK!

Life can be hard: your lover cheats on you; you lose a family member; you can’t pay the bills. And it can be great: you’ve had the hottest sex of your life; you get that plum job; you muster the courage to write your novel. Sugar—the once-anonymous online columnist at The Rumpus, now revealed as Cheryl Strayed, author of the best-selling memoir Wild—is the person thousands turn to for advice. Tiny Beautiful Things gathers the best of "Dear Sugar" in one place and includes never-before-published columns.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Don't think it could have been.

What could Cheryl Strayed have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Used much, much less vulgar language.

Have you listened to any of Cheryl Strayed and Steve Almond (intro) ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to WILD and loved it.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Serious disappointment. Did not even make it through the first half of the book.

    Any additional comments?

Wish I could get my credit back!

Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in.
