What is the meaning of life? It's a question every thoughtful person has pondered at one time or another. Indeed, it may be the biggest question of all-at once profound and universal, but also deeply personal. We want to understand the world in which we live, but we also want to understand how to make our own lives as meaningful as possible; to know not only why we're living, but that we're doing it with intention, purpose, and ethical commitment.

Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Jay L. Garfield?

    NO

What was most disappointing about The Great Courses’s story?

Great until the end when he used philosophers to sell a point of view. I enjoy OBJECTIVE history. This book DOES NOT meet that objective. I do not like attempts to manipulate me.

What about Professor Jay L. Garfield’s performance did you like?

The first 75% of the book was good.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes ... it was really good for a while.

    Any additional comments?

Big disappointment near the end. Very SELECTIVE in choice of philosophers as well as points to be considered. I know this is always true but seemed obvious to me that instructor was selling his own viewpoint.

In this magnificent biography, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Lion and Franklin and Winston brings vividly to life an extraordinary man and his remarkable times. Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power gives us Jefferson the politician and president, a great and complex human being forever engaged in the wars of his era. Philosophers think; politicians maneuver. Jefferson’s genius was that he was both and could do both, often simultaneously. Such is the art of power.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes ... and no. Apologetic pro Jefferson book. Whitewashes faults ... skips over major negatives. Unnecessarily denigrates Jefferson opponents. Otherwise interesting.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Not sure.

What about Edward Herrmann and Jon Meacham ’s performance did you like?

    Good narration.

    Any additional comments?

Not bad ... but apologetic biography. Very critical of Jefferson enemies including Washington while it downplays Jefferson's contributions to negative campaigning and "dirty tricks". He was a great man with big flaws ... this book misses the second part. Most of the negatives are explained away.
