Unlike the other arts, American literature has been a powerful, influential, and leading aspect of American culture. By turns sedate and mercurial and possessing a moral mind set of various social values, the American short story reveals in its pages the psyche of a growing, sprawling nation whose sense of destiny has always been larger than life. Here are seven masterpieces that will make you smile, make you frown, and leave you pondering the mystery that surrounds the soul of a great nation.

    James says: "Beautifully performed!"
    "Depressing!"
    Overall

What a bunch of downer stories! The writing was eloquent and poetic. The reading was excellent. The Faulkner story was especially poignant. But why would anyone put these stories together for a collection? Five of the seven stories turn on someone dying a sad and lonely death. All except Daniel Webster are totally humorless. These stories should come with a cyanide capsule. Oops, I think that was the plot of one of the stories...

The first time Bridger saw Dana she was dancing barefoot, her hair aflame in the red glow of the club, her body throbbing with rhythms and cross-rhythms that only she could hear. He was mesmerized. That night they were both deaf, mouthing to each other over the booming bass. And it was not until their first date, after he had agonized over what CD to play in the car, that Bridger learned that her deafness was profound and permanent. By then, he was falling in love.

    "Worth the reading"
    Overall

The stroy of ID theft was current, interesting, and relevant if less than gripping. But Dana Halter, the main character, is deaf and that sets this story apart and makes it worth the "reading."

Don Quixote, the old gentleman of La Mancha, takes to the road in search of adventure and remains undaunted in the face of repeated disaster.

"I know why I never read this before"
    Overall

I know this is a classic, but I got tired of it pretty quickly. I'm glad I've "read" it now, but it wasn't as gripping and deep as all the references have led me to believe.

A journey of 167,000 lights years begins with...a bar of soap? Fasten your zero gravity restraints for Robert Heinlein's novel of intergalactic adventure, a story that carries teenager Clifford "Kip" Russell from his job as soda jerk to space-suit winner to alien abductee! Along the way Kip is joined by a pint-sized genius named Peewee and an empathetic alien creature known as "the Mother Thing."

Laura says: "My kids voted this one of the best"
"Fun for the kid in you"
    Overall

I'm not a Heinlein fanatic, and I'm not really excited by his "juvinile" stuff, but this is clearly one of the best. A fun story-- don't expect lots of depth, but if you can turn yourself into a kid again, this book can spark your imagination.

Under a Bangkok bridge, inside a bolted-shut Mercedes, a Marine is killed by a python and a swarm of cobras. Two cops arrive too late. Minutes later, only one is alive: Sonchai Jitpleecheep. Now, his partner dead, Sonchai must search for the murderer in the moneyed underbelly of Bangkok - and track a predator of an even more sinister variety.

Brett says: "Bangkok 8 worth the listen"
    "OK story, interesting setting"
    Overall

This is an OK story; nothing special. The thing that sets it a off and raises the level of interest is the setting of Thailand, the religion, and the culture.

One of the most unusual and charming "ghost stories" ever written, A Fine and Private Place introduces readers to Michael Morgan, an ordinary man in an ordinary life, who is not quite ready to be dead. Until he is ready, Michael finds himself trapped between this world and what comes next. He is able to speak only with Mr. Rebeck, the eccentric recluse who lives in a nearby mausoleum, and with an ornery raven, until Laura arrives, ready to take up residence in the cold earth of her grave.

About half way through the book I decided I had to share this book with my wife. We started again from the beginning and listened to it together in the car each day, and we both loved it. It's full of mystery, fantasy, wit and, mostly, charm. Mr. Beagle's reading of his own story with his great Bronx accent clenches the time and place feel of the book. This fantasy is not the sort of thing I usually read, but I was utterly charmed.

    >The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of 12 stories by Arthur Conan Doyle that were originally published in Strand magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. This collection includes some of Holmes' most famous cases.

    J. Green says: "A master story teller."
    "Exciting Adventures Well Told"
    Overall

This recording offers some of the most famous cases read by a cast of actors that bring the stories alive. I'm a fan but not a fanatic, and I enjoyed hearing the stories I had read decades ago (and seen a few years ago) reminding me of the essence of Sherlock Holmes. Lots of fun.

    "Very Bad Quality Recording"
    Overall

I want to read this book, and it seems like it would be ideal to listen to as an audio book. But this recording is of such poor quality that I haven't been able to stand listening to it. I've tried to start it several times, but the worble and wow and flutter make me rip the earphones out of my ears in disgust. I hope Audible gets a better version.
