I truly enjoyed Water for Elephants and so I was anxious to read this book, also written by Sara Gruen. And she didn't disappoint. I like her characters very much, and am glad there were no relationship cliches to have to forgive. The research was great and the story refreshingly different. What will be next from her??
I was skeptical going into this one. My husband keeps talking about how he is going to "walk across America" once he is retired. It was with that in mind, that I gave this one a listen. And I LOVED IT! It was so good at making me feel like I was walking right alongside Harold and I kept hoping that Queenie would indeed be waiting. This one may be a surprise hit to you too.
I had purchased this book a few months back, after reading about it in EW mag. Then after seeing it on so many of the audible editors BEST lists, I moved it up the queue and was anxious to hear what all the raves were about. And I kept waiting. And waiting. I thought it was "okay", but certainly not one of the top 10 this year on my list.
Found this book listed on several best seller lists and gave it a try. The writing is so well done, I could see the community and feel the southern humidity. The characters are well defined. A satisfying ending as well. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed every bit of this story. It was great to learn more about the women who live, and learn to be stronger in such a conflicted country. The descriptive writing made me "see" these women and the environment they survive in. Also makes me want to find an organization the I can contribute to to help these women.
I'm a big fan of Lee Child and Vince Flynn. I came across a description of Cotton Malone and searched out the first in the series. The research is amazing! The flow of the story is comfortable, and edgy. I'm hoping to find more back story in future adventures, to get a better feel of how Cotton came to be......Cotton.
Sitting, on the freeway, for over 90 minutes waiting for an accident to clear. I had just finished listening to a book, and while scrolling through my library, this caught my eye. I was laughing, nodding my head, enjoying every moment of Julia's book. She takes a very complex and personal conversation and shares, for which I will always be thankful.
