Best-selling novelist Kate Drake is one of seven sisters gifted with amazing powers of witchcraft. Returning home in time for her northern California town's annual Christmas pageant, Kate catches the spirit of the season and decides to open a bookstore in a charming but run-down historic mill. Decorated former U.S. Army Ranger Matt Granite, now a local contractor, doesn't mind working in the undeniably eerie house -- not if it means getting closer to Kate. There's something about the quiet, sensual woman that powerfully attracts him.

I enjoyed the Drake sisters and the interplay between them. They are a strong and unusual family.

The reading was good. Good use of voice modulation and inflection.

A former Delta Force commander, Brad Taylor proves with this breathtaking debut thriller that Vince Flynn and Brad Thor have company. A collection of top operatives, the Taskforce was commissioned by the highest levels of government, kept secret from the media and even Congress. The best of the Taskforce bunch, Pike Logan knows the greatest threat to American security is one or two idealogues. Unfortunately for them, they’ve just crossed Pike’s path.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the story. At times, I found it hard to follow all the bad guys.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I didn't like the voice he used for the female lead. He was trying to sound feminine, but ended up whining.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I can see this book as a movie. It has a lot of action and covers a lot of the globe. It would probably be another "Jack Reacher" type movie.

    Any additional comments?

This was a spy mystery covering a lot of territory.

Elena Klovis was supposed to be her kingdom's Cinderella - until an accident of fate left her with a completely inappropriate prince! Determined not to remain with her stepfamily, Elena set out to get a new job - and ended up becoming the Fairy Godmother for the land. But "Breaking with Tradition" was no easy matter. True, she didn't have to sleep in the chimney, but she had to deal with arrogant, stuffed-shirt princes who kept trying to rise above their place in the tale.

Would you try another book from Mercedes Lackey and/or Gabra Zackman?

I will definitely try another Mercedes Lackey book. This was a light, very enjoyable read.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the way the author brought a twist to the old Cinderella tale and interwove other fairy tale characters into the story. It was quite fun to suddenly see a connection to another story I've known all my life. Very creative and Gabra Zachman did a great job on the voices.

The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age 15 is not always enough to propel someone through life at age 30; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Overall, the story was well written, but few of the characters were people I could identify with or found lovable. They all seemed to just whine their way through their trials and tribulations. Some of the characters could have been more interesting but were not well developed enough to become the "friends" often found in books. The story was also a little slow ... maybe because I wasn't caught up in any of the characters.

When his son Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson was devastated, afraid he might never be able to communicate with his child. But when Isaacson, a lifelong horseman, rode their neighbor's horse with Rowan, Rowan improved immeasurably. He was struck with a crazy idea: why not take Rowan to Mongolia the one place in the world where horses and shamanic healing intersected?

What made the experience of listening to The Horse Boy the most enjoyable?

Since I'm always open to alternative healing styles, I found The Horse Boy to be an inspiring story. I could feel that pain, embarrassment and frustration of the parents in trying to deal with an autistic child. The book is so well written and the reading is excellent. Overall, a story written from the heart.

What other book might you compare The Horse Boy to and why?

Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. This is another very well written (but fictional) book that really made me re-evaluate social "norms" and how we choose to life our lives.

Lauren is downtown Chicago's youngest elite realtor. She's also a witch. She must be - the fetching spell for Witches' Chat isn't supposed to make mistakes. So says the woman who coded the spell, at least. The tall, dark, and handsome guy sent to assess her is a witch too (and no, that doesn't end the way you might think). What he finds in Lauren will change lives, mess with a perfectly good career, and require lots of ice cream therapy.

What disappointed you about A Modern Witch?

The story started with an contemporary on-line world of witches that sounded like it could be fun. Unfortunately, the author never really took advantage of all the opportunities to make an interesting story. I kept putting it down because it was boring. It took a while to get through the entire story. Overall, I'd give this a miss.

What was most disappointing about Debora Geary’s story?

Unfulfilled potential for a good, fun story,

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

What did you like best about this story?

The author effectively ran through all the major events in history over a 100 year period with a thread that ties it all together into one life. Very enjoyable, but sometimes you have to pay attention to who is coming in an out of the story. The story is quite whimsical and an enjoyable read.

If you could rename The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, what would you call it?

Would you listen to Me Before You again? Why?

Yes. The author presents me with a lot to think about. I couldn't put it down, though it was pretty obvious where the story would end.

What other book might you compare Me Before You to and why?

My Sister's Keeper. Similar thought provoking social and medical issues.

What does Susan Lyons bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her narrative helps to develop each of the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the final decision has to be made, I really wondered what I would feel in the same situation. I know what I would do, but it wouldn't be easy.

    Any additional comments?

Excellent book. I recommended it to several friends. It would make a great discussion book for a Book Club.

Autopsies indicate that the killer cannot be human. But the museum's directors plan to go ahead with a big bash to celebrate the new exhibition, in spite of the murders. What did you like best about this story?

The science involved in the story was really interesting. The development of multiple "smart characters" (rather than just Pendergast) was a great addition. Some of it was a little to graphic for my taste.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scenes in the lab figuring out how the genes worked together were really interesting.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I needed to take breaks to keep all the information separate.

    Any additional comments?

Some parts of the story just seemed to go on and on. In between the yawns, there was a terrific story.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story itself was probably average. It could have been a better story with more action and less talk about "feeeeelings".

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her attempt at a southern accent was horrible. She made our heroine sound like a whining, brainless ninny. It was painful to listen to this.
