"Claire Danes brings this story to life!"
I have been a fan of this tale for many years. I was excited when the Claire Danes narration became available. I was not disappointed.
Margaret Atwood has managed to tell a futuristic tale in such a way that it almost remains timeless. The technology mentioned in the book is just detailed enough as to its sophistication but not detailed enough to lend itself to dating the story.
To imagine a world where women essentially become brood stock is unthinkable but yet, is it? Changes don't happen overnight. Ideas creep into our society and our world views slowly adapt until we normalize the outrageous.
This story really makes you think.
"Yawn"
I was excited when I started listening to this book but it just seemed to fall apart after the first few chapters. I got very bored listening and had a tough time finishing. I am not sure why it affected me this way... I wasn't impressed.
"Great Listen"
I was very impressed with this book. It kind of reminded me of the style of Jussi-Adler Olsen and Steig Larrson. The story was suspenseful and moved at a comfortable pace.
"Great Narrator, okay story"
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I was very impressed by the narration. Very impressed indeed. The story itself was good but not as meaty as I would have liked. I liked the characters but wasn't invested in them. I was looking for something along the lines of Stieg Larsson or Jussi Adler-Olsen so my expectations were rather high.
"Awesome!"
Well, I have to say that I was pleasantly delighted with this new book by J.K. Rowling. I have to admit I was a little afraid to read this having read and LOVED the Harry Potter Series. I bought the book and was taken in right from the first chapter. The narrator was fantastic as well so the whole experience was positive.
Ok, I am not going to try like a professional critic here. I thought the story was great, I was fully engaged the entire way through. The characters were relatable and I cared about them as I heard the story. I thought the subject matter was really interesting and it made me think a lot about my own life the the lives of those around me. What kind of domino effect would take place if I died? Would it matter?
Great book. Highly recommend it!!
"Incredible Story, Incredible Narration"
I did not read the print version.
The Book Thief because of the subject matter I suppose.
I have not listened to her other performances but would highly recommend this narrator. I felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table with her totally enraptured by her story.
Extreme reactions? Revulsion at the cruelty, relief at some of the kindnesses, I laughed out loud and I was frustrated too. Great book.
Thanks Audible!
"Wow"
I was reluctant to invest in this book but am I ever glad I did. The narration was incredible for the story. The story itself was so interesting and kept me guessing. I loved the way it was written and presented.
"Delightful"
I like Sophie Kinsella's stories. This particular one had me laughing out loud in a couple of instances which is a good sign. I enjoyed the humour and it was a nice change of pace.
"Enjoyed the Listen"
I was impressed with this book and the way it was presented. Great story, and really good narration.
"Great movie, boring listen."
I was excited to listen to this book when it was recommended to me by a friend who read it. It is so technically detailed that I think it would be a fantastic read but it got to be too tedious for me to listen to. I couldn't skim over the repetitive areas like I may do when reading a novel. Normally I am a huge fan of technical stuff (Dan Brown, Michael Crichton) but not in this case.
