"Loved The Book and Look forward to the series!"
Absolutely! This book will need two listens at least. It is very involved and I agree with the other reviewers that wrote that this book is not for the feint of heart. It is obviously a large story and this first book is a bit confusing, though not as hard to follow as I thought it would be. Due to being a bit confusing I decided to rate the story 4 stars.
Having said that, I will say that this author is one hell of a writer. His writing skills are up there with the best fantasy writers out there (in my opinion). I place him in the company of George RR Martin, Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, and Patrick Rothfuss. I knew within the first 10 minutes of listening to his prose that I was in good hands and even though his story was a bit convoluted in places, when I did get a little lost, I didn't really mind because what was being said was still very entertaining and by the end of the book it all came together.
I was extremely excited to hear that the story only gets better from this point on and that there are 10 books or so to look forward to! AUDIBLE and Mr. Erikson, would you please get your act together and get these books out in audio format! I am so looking forward to the rest of this series of books! I know that I will probably have to read these books now, because I don't think I can wait for the audiobooks versions to come out, but I know that it would be incredibly enjoyable and add an extra dimension to my enjoyment, if I could "hear" these books!
I really loved Ralph Lister's narration. This is my first time hearing him and I felt that he was a perfect choice for this book. He made every character stand out and I never was confused about who was saying what. He did an excellent job and deserves 5 stars for his performance.
"Damn he is a good writer! Damn good narrator too!"
I have not read a western in many, many years. Though this story technically is not a western, there are no six shooters, it is very much a western world and story. Even if you are not a fan of the genre please don't let this fact put you off. Joe Abercrombie is so good a story teller and writer that it simply doesn't matter what genre he tells his yarns in, you simply know that it will be a rip roaring ride and well worth your time and money. This story is no exception.
His characters are so wonderfully hard edged, fantastic and yet quite real in all the ways that count. The dialog between the characters is snappy, intelligent, thought provoking and humorous!
I have loved All of Abercrombie's works to date and this story, though quite different in its being a frontier, western/ fantasy story, is no exception. Just loved it. I give the story five stars.
What did I think of the narrator? Steven Pacey was so incredibly good at bringing these characters to life. I can not imagine another Voice for these guys. With his voice of major general Nikoli Koska taking the highest of honors. Abercrombie's dialog and Pacey's voice had me laughing out loud many, many times, and had my full attention with his wonderfully profane/ profound view of the world.
Five star performance by Mr. Pacey!
Overall, 5 star book. Well worth your time!
I should say that this book is gritty, lots of profanity, death and mayhem. Definitely a rated R story. Take this into consideration when listening to it. I have 3 kids and therefore listened to it on my headphones and when they were not present. If you don't have kids, let it rip out loud because it is really a fun story!
"An excellent listen! Very good story!"
I have been a long time Jim Butcher fan! Ghost story is an excellent addition to the Dresden world better than his earlier novels and only a shade less as entertaining as his last novel. An excellent, fun story that got me laughing out loud several times, got my adrenaline up several more times, and had me thoroughly engaged through the story.
This is my first audiobook from the Dresden series and therefore I felt no bias with regards to the narrator, something that seems to have bothered many a reviewer. All I can say is this. The narrator did an excellent job of keeping me fully involved in the story! His different voices were excellent. The only two marks against his reading are very minor. I thought his Russian accent was pretty poor and I did have a slight difficulty distinguishing between bob and the ghost captain. They were quite similar and there was a moment where I kept "seeing" the ghost captain in my imagination, when it was bob speaking because the voices were so similar. Please take this criticism lightly because I loved his rendition of nearly every character except for the few sentences uttered by a very minor Russian. On the other side his voice for the women in the story were excellent. Especially for Mab and Harry's godmother, which I particularly enjoyed. I loved his ghost captain and bobs voice very much as well, they were just very similar and that confused me for a short bit.
I highly recommend this Audiobook to anyone who loves a great yarn and enjoys the supernatural mystery genre that the Dresden novels belong to.
