Christian Rummel is excellent, as usual. Flawlessly switched characters, great tone and inflection. I will be looking for more books he narrates!
Great series, I had this one pre-ordered. The events that transpire are well written and performed, but unlike his other books, this one doesn't have a huge climatic event. Instead there are some smaller plot twists and it sets the stage for something big to happen .... in the next installment, probably a year away.
This is an alternate reality book, however, the authors presume that everything today would still be the same even though in WW2 era there was an emergence of super-powered meta-beings. That somehow there has been a secret struggle between good metas and evil metas, but it didn't really affect everyday normal people. Well, the whole time I kept thinking how 50 years of metas would have such a huge impact on the timeline and world scope ... how did the Vietnam War turn out? How come "normals" still run the country? What about Professional sports?
Long story short: I just couldn't buy into it at all, so even though the performance was well done, I can't take any more of these books.
Probably not. While he has great vocal skills (differentiating characters well), he needs a pronunciation coach and he is way too overly dramatic. It was like 1960's Captain Kirk was reading. This guy makes every sentence DRAMATIC. "And THEN, he went INTO the .... baaathrooom!" Seriously, I'm sure not every sentence ends in an exclamation point, but Kevin Collin's makes it sound that way.I actually stopped listening 4 or 5 times just because of the narrator. It gets hard to tell what's really dramatic and important when he's ALWAYS dramatic!
This book is way too slow. I know there are a lot of characters and moving armies around the world takes a long time, but there just wasn't much action. I love David Weber for his great battle scenes - epic space naval battles from Honor Harrington series for example. I actually like how he shows the development of technologies in this series, but I have more than 2/3 through and there had only a couple skirmishes. He appears to be setting the stage for some fierce and epic battles but... get to it already!
Maybe I'll update this post when I finally get to the end.
