At his death in 1988, Robert A. Heinlein left a legacy that almost single-handedly defined modern science fiction. But one of Heinlein's masterpieces was never finished. In 1955, he began work on Variable Star, a powerful and passionate tale of two young lovers driven apart by pride, power, and the vastness of interstellar time and space. Now, the Heinlein estate has authorized award-winning author Spider Robinson to expand his outline into a full-length novel. And the result is vintage Heinlein.

    Overall

I listened to this book just after finishing "Have Spacesuit Will Travel." I was blown away by how well Spider Robinson captured the feel and pacing of Robert Heinlein in writing this story. Having loaded both books into my MP3 player, I went from the end of one to the start of the other . . . and it was pretty nice.

I would suggest you take the time to listen to this story.

In this, their first adventure, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters.

As a pet lover who has owned dogs for a long time, I decided to pick up this mystery as a way to try something outside of SciFi, which is what I listen to the most.

I found myself enthralled by Chet. He's just an awesome dog. As a dog lover, I was taken on a ride with Chet's adventure. He's a loyal, cool dog who, like any dog, can get distracted, but he's a good boy always.

There were a couple of times during the story that I had to pull to the side of the road and listen while gripping the steering wheel tightly because of the suspense, but that only attests to Spencer Quinn's narrative style.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book and any other in the series. It's a great read.

Set in 2082, Peter Watts' Blindsight is fast-moving, hard SF that pulls readers into a futuristic world where a mind-bending alien encounter is about to unfold. After the Firefall, all eyes are locked heavenward as a team of specialists aboard the self-piloted spaceship Theseus hurtles outbound to intercept an unknown intelligence.

Would you consider the audio edition of Blindsight to be better than the print version?

No. I have not read the print edition.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something less strange. It felt a little too close to the Clarke stories about Rama with vampires and gene modified being included.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The reading was drone-like and made it hard to follow.

Nobody blends good science with bad puns as brilliantly as Spider Robinson. Now he's back with the latest chapter of the Callahan saga: an improbable tale of impending doom, a road trip, space, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

Kathryn says: "Purchase Callahan's Chronicles First!"
    "Shuttle Launch Worth It All"
    Overall

This is a great story . . . and Callahan's gang travels to Florida to start a new life. Along the way, Spider Robinson writes one of the best descriptions of someone watching a Space Shuttle launch I've ever heard. The mental imagery brought tears to my eyes.

It is a great book, especially if you want to hear some great puns and good story line.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you ever thought history was boring, David McCullough’s performance of his fascinating book will change your mind. In this stirring audiobook, McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success.

Mark says: "Front Seat on History"
    "A Great Book"
    Overall

I first became acquainted with Mr. McCullough's writing when I listened to the unabridged version of Truman. His narrative style, bringing in a fuller picture of the events surrounding the first years of the American Revolutionary War, really painted a greater picture for me of the era that led to the birth of our nation. Read it. It'll change the way you look at history.

The life of Harry S. Truman is one of the greatest of American stories, filled with vivid characters and dramatic events. In this riveting biography, acclaimed historian David McCullough not only captures the man, a more complex, informed, and determined man than ever before imagined, but also the turbulent times in which he rose, boldly, to meet unprecedented challenges.

    Erik says: "Thoroughly enjoyable"
    "A Wonderful Biography"
    Overall

Before listening to this biography, I only knew that Truman had succeeded FDR and was the man who made the decision to drop the first nuclear bomb. After listening to this book, I have come to love and get a greater understanding of Truman, the man. The book is excellent, and Mr. McCullough did a thorough job in trying to capture the essence of President Truman, warts and all. This biography truly made me wish I had had a chance to meet Harry S Truman, and in a way, I did.
