  • Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Michael Lewis
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

    Story
    (668)

Moneyball reveals a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the giant offices of major league teams and the dugouts. But the real jackpot is a cache of numbers collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, and physics professors.

Sarah Dumoulin says: "No need to be a baseball fan"
"It was like a mystery--what happens next?"

Would you listen to Moneyball again? Why?

Absolutely. I own a small business and this book has me looking for "inefficiencies" that I can use. I liked the movie, and the book gave me a completely different angle. There are a lot more explanations for why things happened.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick performed Moneyball very well. The narration flows naturally and the voice makes sense with the book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

What are you paying too much for?

  • Good Omens

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 32 mins)

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Lauren says: "Great voice adds to already amazing story"
    "Better than the book!"

What made the experience of listening to Good Omens the most enjoyable?

The narrator (Martin Jarvis) does such a great job with this I was disappointed when it ended. Jarvis performs the different voices brilliantly.

What other book might you compare Good Omens to and why?

The Screwtape letters is the nearest comparison due to the subject matter. This one comes from a decidedly more humanist viewpoint.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the description of the incorrectly printed bibles. I'm trying to work the "extra" verses into a Sunday School lesson.

Who was the most memorable character of Good Omens and why?

The characters are good, but the overall telling of the story is the star.

    Any additional comments?

I also recommend Jarvis's tellings of P.G. Wodehouse.
