ZF5 continues the steady entertainment the Zombie Fallout series has provided. It hasn't jumped above the rest or fallen below the rest - the entire series is consistently good!
It's a solid pace that isn't afraid to get a little wild in its plot devices to keep things interesting and entertaining. Through the curves and twists, no matter what, you won't be putting this story down.
Mike Talbot - he just instills a perfect mix of humanity, levity, and gravity to this character.
You can sleep when you're dead.
The only drawback/reservation I have is the voice acting for the character Paul. Paul slips in and out of a Southie accent as the story telling goes on after book 1, and it's most prevalent in this book. It always throws me off that Paul and Mike grew up together, but Paul is the only one with the accent. It seems to grow more and more prevalent the more the narrator uses the character, as opposed to anything in the story that would prompt it. It draws me out of the story a bit - I'd rather have Paul never pick up the accent. But that's a relatively small gripe compared to the awesome way Sean Runnette manages the rest of the story telling. He slips very seamlessly between the rest of the characters and it's extremely engaging. ZF6 is out, but I'll be waiting for the audiobook version before I get into it!
Enthralling, entertaining, well-narrated.
The writing is an exercise in great storytelling, even if a bit much effort goes into the humor at times. I think the narrator translates this great storytelling and humor amazingly well, and it just makes the entire experience a lot of fun.
I would hate to spoil anything, but the author has a great way of making you adjust the current level of things before slapping a new twist down on the table. There's a point or three in this book that just leap out.
This book has the perfect mixture of taking the right amount of seriousness with the right amount of truly artful storytelling. It's pure entertainment - but go into this expecting a zombie story. This will not be War and Peace! Go in with a good expectation of an entertaining tale, and it's a great ride!
