Best-selling writer and physician Gabor Maté looks at the epidemic of addictions in our society, tells us why we are so prone to them, and details what is needed to liberate ourselves. Starting with a close view of his drug-addicted patients, Dr. Maté looks at his own history of compulsive behavior, weaving a story of real people who struggle with addiction with the latest research on addiction and the brain. In a bold synthesis of clinical experience, insight and cutting edge scientific findings, Dr. Maté sheds light on this most puzzling of human frailties.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you seek to understand the struggles of addiction, this book will provide information about the biological process, the behavioral processes, and how you and others move in and out of those processes. Its a little heavy at times, but its worth listening to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts?

The chapter called "A word to family, friends, and caregivers" had a lot to say about being a healthy participant in an addicts life. Its not all peaches and cream, but its honest and pure.

Have you listened to any of Daniel Maté’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this was my first Audible book.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

    Suspensful, witty, modern

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

No idea, because this is my first fiction

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Veep. She was smart, shy, and had a sharp wit about her.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud at the dialogue a few times.

    Any additional comments?

In an effort to push out of my non-fiction box, I gave this book a try. Much to my surprise, I found myself creating situations that would allow me to listen to more of the book. I like the modern references to things that are sort of pop-culture and the witty banter of the characters. The reader's voice for each character was awesome!! They were so well done that you could recognize which character was talking without the "said Joe" stuff. I will go on to look for more good fiction like this one.
