Winn Van Meter is heading for his family's retreat on the pristine New England island of Waskeke. Normally a haven of calm, for the next three days this sanctuary will be overrun by tipsy revelers as Winn prepares for the marriage of his daughter Daphne to the affable young scion Greyson Duff. Winn's wife, Biddy, has planned the wedding with military precision, but arrangements are sideswept by a storm of salacious misbehavior and intractable lust: Daphne's sister, Livia, who has recently had her heart broken by Teddy Fenn.

Can't really say there was any humor here as some have said. Kept waiting for a character, any character to display some redeeming quality. But every time a new character was introduced, they seemed to be more pathetic than the previous one. The plot was shallow at best, the performance was so-so, and I was glad when it was over.

Max Tudor has adapted well to his post as vicar of St. Edwold's in the idyllic village of Nether Monkslip. The quiet village seems the perfect home for Max, who has fled a harrowing past as an MI5 agent. But this new-found serenity is quickly shattered when the highly vocal and unpopular president of the Women's Institute turns up dead at the Harvest Fayre. The death looks like an accident, but Max's training as a former agent kicks in, and before long he suspects foul play.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. It was difficult to stay focused after all of the characters were introduced.

Would you be willing to try another book from G. M. Malliet? Why or why not?

Probably not because this one was not what I expected.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Page’s performances?

It would depend on the book. But he reads fast and has a very pronounced British accent/

Caren Gray manages Belle Vie, a sprawling antebellum plantation that sits between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, where the past and the present coexist uneasily. The estate's owners have turned the place into an eerie tourist attraction, complete with full-dress re-enactments and carefully restored slave quarters. Outside the gates, a corporation with ambitious plans has been busy snapping up land from struggling families who have been growing sugar cane for generations, and now replacing local employees with illegal laborers. Tensions mount when the body of a female migrant worker is found in a shallow grave on the edge of the property.

What would have made The Cutting Season better?

    The Narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Quincy Tyler Bernstine’s performances?

Don't know. Seemed to move slowly and never finished it.

    Any additional comments?

This book was hard to stick with. Difficult to listen to the the narrator, so monotone and uninteresting. Also, things were introduced but then the back stories would take you in an entirely different direction. Maybe the author's intent but not enough there to keep one's interest.

It’s 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows, which he hopes will honor his family business and earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll. Publicly unrecognized by Tiffany, Clara conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which he is long remembered.

After the first few chapters I thought this would be a good book. The story started to become many. By the end of the book the plots were not only about Clare but women's suffarage, plight of immigrants in the early 1900's, birth of unions, Tiffany glass works, Louis Comfort Tiffany, a love story, personal tragedy, not to mention the tedious cutting, selecting and placing of every shard of glass. There was just too much to call it one story. I finished because the narration was good and I paid for it.

In the summer of 1968, Jo Becker ran out on the marriage and the life her parents wanted for her, and escaped, for one beautiful, idyllic year, into a life that was bohemian and romantic, living under an assumed name in a rambling group house in Cambridge. It was a time of limitless possibility, but it ended in a single instant when Jo returned home one night to find her best friend lying dead in a pool of blood on the living room floor.

The main character in this book has no redeeming characteristics. Nor do any of the rest of the well under developed characters. Not a fan.
