"Might have been a great experience"
My wife loved this book, so I tried it. Fool that I am, I failed to notice that it was "read by the author." Bender might be a good author, but her reading made the book sound like classified ads.
Authors reading their own books. Isn't there a proposition against that in California?
"Strong story, a tad long"
Worth a credit. Warning: the book is more than 20 years old and feels a bit dated.
I prefer single readers to casts, but the story itself is strong and held my attention most of the way. I did feel, however, that it began to grow a bit predictable and I was ready for the story to wind up about 45 minutes before it actually did.
I did not find the reading too clipped or fast. I'll read more Morrell after this one.
"Made me re-think many things"
This is about facts... what we think we know and what our prejudices drive us to believe. The issue is global warming; the perspective is new for me.
Try it; definitely worth the credit.
"A volume too far"
Save your precious credits and listening hours for something that will actually entertain while it illuminates.
I managed to listen through volumes one and two, but slogging into a third finally defeated me. Rand's ideas are worth understanding, but the speechifying finally wore me past patience and stamina. The "tragic" herosim of the main characters ceased being interesting.
If only Rand had cut this monster down by a third... the writing might have been tighter; the characters, limited in depth though they are, might have had more sharply drawn and entertaining trajectories; and the terribly dated "bogey and bacall" posing might have held me if only for historic and nostalgic reasons.
I reached a point where I no longer cared how it all turned out.
With no small sense of release I quit this volume for good about a third of the way in.
