They're an iconic part of history's most celebrated birth. But what do we really know about the Three Kings of the Nativity, besides the fact that they followed a star to Bethlehem bearing strange gifts? The Bible has little to say about this enigmatic trio. But leave it to Seth Grahame-Smith, the brilliant and twisted mind behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to take a little mystery, bend a little history, and weave an epic tale.

Ryan says: "A nice twist to the greatest story ever told."

Where does Unholy Night rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the top 5. I started listening to Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter on a road trip with my wife. We took it in to the room with us and continued the story. It was the same with Unholy Night.

    I liked the whole thing.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Battling with corpses in the valley.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and wowed at the connections between the original Bible story and Seth's reinvention/reconstruction of same.

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The stunning rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class - made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding - has been growing in power for a generation.

Over the past decade, Americans watched in bafflement and rage as one institution after another - from Wall Street to Congress, the Catholic Church to corporate America, even Major League Baseball - imploded under the weight of corruption and incompetence. In the wake of the Fail Decade, Americans have historically low levels of trust in their institutions; the social contract between ordinary citizens and elites lies in tatters. How did we get here? Christopher Hayes offers a radically novel answer.

While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for hundreds of years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.

I first heard of this boom when Dave Letterman was commenting on the early travails of our nation with vampires. He did it in a funny way so I looked for the book.

What other book might you compare Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter to and why?

    Early Anne Rice Vampire Lestat.

What did you love best about Cherry?

Karr's ability to take us back in time to an era where she and I grew up and came of age.

If you’ve listened to books by Mary Karr before, how does this one compare?

    No, 1st time.

Have you listened to any of Mary Karr’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Can't say but her voice is provocative and sexy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    no

    Any additional comments?

I am a MWM and his book was recommended by a female friend who us a Karr devotee.
As there are so many interesting books available (and so little time) this expedition into the nostalgic world of Mary Karr may be a one and done for me.
