Things were going so well for P.I. John Taylor, that it was only a matter of time before everything hit the fan. Walker, the powerful, ever-present, never to-be-trusted agent who runs the Nightside on behalf of The Authorities, is dying. And he wants John to be his successor-a job that comes with more baggage, and more enemies, than anyone can possibly imagine.

Waverly Bryson is a successful businesswoman in her late 20s who almost has it all: a dream job in sports PR, two best friends, and a bar where everybody knows her name. What she doesn’t have is a ring on her finger. And after being ditched at the altar, she’s in no hurry to get one. Besides, plenty of other issues keep her busy, including her wayward father, a new rival at work, and an ever-nagging fear that her life is not turning out as she thought it would...or should.

Waste of time and effort. No story line other than an ineffective female and no character development.

It's June in Montreal, and Dr. Temperance Brennan, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of Director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend in beautiful Quebec City. First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. The remains are probably old and only of archeological interest, but Tempe must make sure they're not a case for the police. One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she'll spend the weekend in the crime lab.

What would have made Deja Dead better?

Another narrator would help. I could hear too much mouth/saliva motion, smacks and swallows. Narrator sounds impatient to be done.

Has Deja Dead turned you off from other books in this genre?

I would try another one, but they are much, much to jammed with Tempe's internal dialog and way, way too much French accent and French words.

How could the performance have been better?

Either better recording with more sound suppression. You can hear the saliva in the woman's mouth.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It was cute, but predictable. I understand it's the first in a series, so it leaves you hanging.

What was most disappointing about Molly Harper’s story?

It was a bit childish, except for the sex.

    Any additional comments?

the author has an original perspective on a vampires life.

  • Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Andy says: "entertaining but not as good as kitchen conf."

If you could sum up Medium Raw in three words, what would they be?

This is a funny, touching look at the world of foodie insiders. By narrating his own book Bourdain really demonstrates his attitudes about a variety of food topics, chefs, chef sell outs, cooking shows, etc. Be warned the language gets a bit rough. If that doesn't offend you, this is a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the descriptions of odd foods and the peeks at the personalities of cooking show chefs.
