"I love this series"
From the whodunit to the narration, this series is great! Well written, real characters and spot on narration. Start from the beginning, you'll be anxious for the next in the series!
"Felt like it was churned out to meet a deadline"
Well rounded characters, more suspense, a better narrator
It was blah, utterly forgettable! It had all the right stuff for a suspenseful, intriguing story and it fell short in every way. The characters were all equally neutral, none possessed any particularly likeable or even unlikeable qualities.
More nuance, variation in the voices. It was hard to tell at times who was speaking b/c the voices were all the same. And all were virtually toneless.
It had a good premise and was written by an author who has written some wonderful books in the past. That's what kept me listening, I kept thinking it would be great any minute!
I'll be VERY hesitant to purchase any future books by this author, I'll probably wait for any new books to appear at my local library rather than waste my money on a something that the author seems to have not put any particular effort into.
"Fabulous"
I think this has been my favorite Joshilyn Jackson book to date. It had everything! True mystery, spirits, relationships, humor - I'm hooked, I hope she never stops writing AND narrating!
"Another excellent Joshilyn Jackson book"
I've loved every single Joshilyn Jackson book I've heard and this was no exception. What WAS different was that Joshilyn did not narrate this one and for some unexplainable reason whoever created the audiobook added a soundtrack at what they obviously felt were the parts that needed music???? The narrator was good, but Joshilyn is 1000x better and her stories stand alone, no need for rinky dink soundtracks, the "mood" is built into the already well crafted storyline.
"Loved it!"
I loved this book! While I will never be either an urban or rural farmer, I grew up in a household that raised meat animals and grew virtually all the produce needed for the year and I think more people who want to do so, should have the freedom to. And it fascinates me to hear how it can be made to work - and work well - in surroundings that don't appear conducive to doing so!
"Good plot premise, poorly executed"
The writing was weak, the characters were boring and the narration for the two main characters was nothing special (although the supporting characters, particularly the bad guys, was great).
"Didn't quite mesh"
The characters in this were all surface, even the main character wasn't well thought out or explained and that made the story always seem a beat off center. I found it easily forgettable.
"Shades of Dennis Lehan"
I really enjoyed this story, the plot twists were well written and the characters were well fleshed out. The main character's need to go in circles and make the worst decisions possible got a little old after awhile, but I'm happy to read more by this author in the future.
"Excellent writing, excellent narration"
I loved this book, much to my surprise! I was iffy when I saw the author was also the narrator, but she did a wonderful, utterly professional job and I believe it enhanced the story. I laughed out loud in some places and just loved the story in general. I really hope to see these characters in the future as I'll wonder where life takes them.
"Great series!"
This whole series (those I've bought so far at least) is great. A true mystery, real characters and a really spot-on narrator.
"Not memorable"
Nor is the main character especially sympathetic, he's actually someone who could use a serious kick in the pants toward being an adult.
