The Alexander McCall Smith books are jewels, and Lisette Lecat, the reader, makes every facet sparkle. Pick one. Pick them all. They are gems.

When Scotland is hit by the recession, Police Constable Hamish Macbeth notices that the Highland people are forced to come up with inventive ways to lure tourists to their sleepy towns. The quaint village of Braikie doesn't have much to offer, other than a place of rare beauty called Buchan's Wood, which was bequeathed to the town. The savvy local tourist director renames the woods "The Fairy Glen," and has brochures printed with a beautiful photograph of a kingfisher rising from a pond on the cover. It isn't long before coach tours begin to arrive.

I read/listened to -- and enjoyed -- many in this series, and, unfortunately, this is the worst I've found. The story is too complex and too unbelievable. Keep it simple, Harmish....

Feelings are running high in the Cotswold village of Thrush Green. The rector's plan for the neglected churchyard doesn't meet with universal approval; there is a clash of personalities at the local school; and someone has returned to the village after an absence of 50 years.

We first discovered Miss Read's books on cassette tapes from the library 30 years ago, and we were delighted to find them again as Audible books -- and hope that more are on the way. Gwen Watford has just the right tone and presence for the stories. The Thrush Green books are simple, comfortable, and a joy. They wear well for repeated listening.

In 1860, as an unmarried girl of 17, Lady Slane nurtures a secret, burning ambition – to become an artist. She becomes, instead, the wife of a great statesman, Henry, the first Earl of Slane, and the mother of six children. Seventy years later, released by widowhood, she abandons the family home in Elm Park Gardens much to the dismay of her pompous sons and daughters.

This book from Vita Sackville-West is a gem, and Wendy Hiller is priceless. (She plays Lady Slane in the BBC TV presentation of All Passion Spent and her reading of the book echoes that performance.) Before the audiobook came to Audible, I searched far and wide and finally found a tape cassette version online. But once it was available digitally, I had to have it.

Nathaniel Patten was one of Thrush Green's most famous sons. A statue of Patten has graced the village green for years, but little is actually known of him among present day townsfolk, until an unexpected letter arrives. It turns out that the upcoming centenary of Thrush Green's own village school and of Patten's founding of his mission school in Africa coincide. What a good excuse to combine the festivities for a very special celebration indeed.

But suddenly it begins to show signs of life.

A return to Thrush Green for more simple stories about life in an English cotswold village, peopled by charming characters who deal with each others foibles and the drama of daily life.

My wife and I discovered Miss Read some 20 years ago in British audiobooks read by Gwen Watford. We're delighted to find them again on audible.com.

Gwen Watford does a splendid job in creating the characters and providing the "picture" of life in Thrush Green.

You can't do better for a pleasant afternoon's listen -- in the car, at home, on vacation or whereever.

When a fire destroys the ugly rectory, there is much discussion among the Thrush Green townsfolk about what will become of the vacant site, now that the previous residents (the village rector and his wife) have been transferred to another village.
