The narrator is really bad. He's more suited to reading the news or the weather or maybe a biography. He distracts from the story which is really a good story. I was able to ignore it for the most part but still didn't enjoy it as much as I shoud have.
The Wendego in the first chapter
Character changes weren't fluid or even consistant. When in the U.K. the accents were sometimes done, sometimes not.
Make sure I don't buy another book narrated by this person unless it's a biography or something that doesn't require character development.
The story is really good if you can ignore the narration.
No. This synopsis read like a mix between Almost Famous with a little Stephen King thrown in. It was a long story about nothing. I listened to the entire book hoping something spooky would happen but the scary aspects are lukewarm at best.
I like the trip back to 1974 but the author spent way too much time with creating the past and developing Dawn's character. She never got away from those two topics for very long.
Lake Shasta in the ending.
This would have been a really great read if the author had spent more time on the curse and allowed the demons to really get at the characters. Instead it was like she dipped her toe in the water and fell asleep. The narrator was great.
The narrator was great however, the story is crazy unrealistic. It is peppered with interesting moments of suspense and LONG minutes of snooze. Fiction is fantasy however, a severely abused woman having instant sexual feelings for a stranger isn't believable. The relationship needed to be developed because of how the book was written.
Beth and her children were terrorize and abused by her husband. It felt like Melinda was more interested in getting Beth in to bed with the handsome former cop than she was exploring how Beth and the kids were warming up to the farm and having a "family" atmosphere. I also found that the flashes from the husband and the serial killer kept me reading but let me down because by the second section of the book, nothing much happened with those characters. It just wasn't a well balanced book. Great premise though.
The moments when the kids started warming up with the horses and the family.
Disappointment with some anger at Beth's husbands sadistic behavior. Mostly, I got bored about 5 hours in to it. I tried to hang on but finally gave up.
Funny, clever, awesome
I love the banter between Bill, his roommates and Sally.
Not really a favorite scene but Bill's internal dialogue when hearing the coven names. I laughed out loud when he renames them.
Bill - he's clever and hilarious. There would not be a dull moment.
Can't wait for the next book!
Intense nail biter!
I've read all of the previous Joe Ledger novels and this one has to be the best! It's a little bit Dan Brown mixed with sci-fi and horror novels.
Ray Porter clearly is an expert at voice inflection. Each character's voice is clear and distinct. I know who's talking before Ray reads who said it.
I loved Joe's interaction with Violin and with Ghost. My body actually felt the stress and strain of each situation in this novel. I could almost spell the blood and feel the fear and frustration as I listened.
Excellent read! I recommend all of the Joe Ledger novels but this one was a great ride.
A lot of things have been said about Karrine Steffans in the media both good and bad. I chose this book after watching an account of abuses of females in the Hip Hop culture. After reading this however, I have changed my perception of her as a victim. She's really a self serving egomaniac who believes that she was put on this earth to be taken care of and helped out.
Whether an effect of her early childhood abuse or not is anyone's guess but she's reading her own story here (badly might I add) and really does play the victim while at the same time admitting to having used sex to manipulate men in to taking care of her, giving her money and paying her bills. I do find it courageous that she was willing to call out all of the men who she had affairs with over the years. A very interesting read if you can get over the bad narration.
