This holiday season, join two of today’s most popular paranormal authors for a special look into their worlds, where creatures are always stirring and no one sleeps through the night. The Bite Before Christmas: Teddy Brunswick knows about the immortals among us. He’s worked with them, called them friend - but he never counted on being snowed in with one over Christmas. Home for the Holidays by Jeaniene Frost: Cat and Bones are looking forward to a normal holiday - at least as “normal” as it gets for the combustible vampire couple....

What disappointed you about The Bite Before Christmas?

why did Jeanine Frost associate herself with Lynsay Sands? I bought the book because I love listening to tales about Cat and Bones - and love Tavia Gilberts narration. Lynsay Sands story was totally uninteresting - the narration even worse.

What was most disappointing about Lynsay Sands and Jeaniene Frost ’s story?

Lynsay Sands story could have been told in one chapter. I bought the book because I love Jeaniene Frost's stories.

What three words best describe Paula Christensen and Tavia Gilbert ’s performance?

Paula - long, drawn out, boring
Tavia - as good as it gets

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Bite Before Christmas?

    do not print Lynsay's story

    Any additional comments?

I still would have bought the book because Jeaniene Frost's part was good - you can just skip the other part.

What did you love best about How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, 3rd Edition?

easy to understand and entertaining listen for a "non musical" person like me

What does Professor Robert Greenberg bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Prof Greenberg seems to be speaking directly to you - his speech is clear, interesting and very entertaining

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I certainly laughed ( must understand American humour )

    Any additional comments?

I'm hooked! I've downloaded two more series ( opera and jazz )

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Game of Thrones to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the book and found the perfomance difficult to comprehend ( slurred accents and irritating voices ) - too much repetition of the same lines ( as if the book had been laid down and same lines repeated when picked up again )

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think the narrator did his best but his style is not suitable to the tale. He would probably do much better reading Dickens

    Any additional comments?

I will buy the book and read it

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Where does The Name of the Wind rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

... I should have savoured the story by reading it first and listening to it the second time around ! A wonderfully spun and captivating tale that merits a comfortable chair and enough time to dream ...

What other book might you compare The Name of the Wind to and why?

can be compared to Philip Pullman's "Dark Materials" or Roger Zelanzy's " Amber Chronicles" which are both just a bit more fantastic/ modern than CS Lewis' "Narnia Chronicles"

I think "Name of the Wind " has become my favourite.

What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?

    good performance

  • Atlas Shrugged

    • Narrated By Scott Brick

In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Mica says: "Hurt version decidedly superior"

Would you listen to Atlas Shrugged again? Why?

I have read Atlas Shrugged twice and listened to it once. Ayn Rand's protest against communism is communicated in such a way that can only be an enormous eye openner for an 'outsider'. Before you attack this huge book, I suggest reading "We the living " and "The Fountainhead "

What was one of the most memorable moments of Atlas Shrugged?

A is A - when you have to remember your priorities in life, this is an extemist appoach that merits consideration. The text and language may be long winded and dated ( remember it was written in 1957 by an author from the Soviet Union ) but the values and morals expressed should never be forgotten.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

FABULOUS performance. For such a lengthy and sometimes long winded book, Scott Brick communicates the complex emotions to perfection. The snivelling bureaucrat, the whining employee, the undeserving and pretentious wife ... he conveys all themes with skill.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

the best performances by the reader were the scenes of confrontation between the industrialists and their "mooching" families and so called friends - such as the 11th anniversay party scene.

    Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book and will listen to it again .

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs)

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
    "captivating"
    Overall

what an excellent story! there are no dull moments with this insight to another world war ll horror situation, - just when you think that the end of the story is near, another chapter and more amazing circumstances arise. a good story with a good moral.
