I found myself drawn into the story, and eventually deeply moved... very well researched and richly drawn characters. The novel succeeds both as a simple "what if" first contact in the middle ages, but also in making us care about the characters, and in a shared celebration of scientific and human discovery.

The narration worked fine for me. Really well done novel, transcending the genre.

I frankly find it hard to believe that Orson Scott Card had anything to do with this. Unbelievably bad writing - terrible cliches, two dimensional characters, with a dumb plot.

It's also got to be hard to make potentially fascinating science (gene therapy) so boring. I just don't know how this one got out the door.

Purely sold on Card's name; I can only hope that the writing is mostly Mr. Johnston's, but I fully put the responsibility on Orson Scott Card who should have stopped such an awfully produced project.

There world of this novel is rich and plausible; I wish there were more stories set in this place. The mysteries of the hotline, the invaders, interesting exploration of culture, cloning (a wonderful twist on this theme), gender, biomechanics, ethics and more, made this a fun read. I'd definitely recommend this one.

I rarely find a download that I can't finish. The narrator is ok, and probably the novel would be great as a novella. The agency stuff as mentioned by others is just too boring to make it through.

I don't write reviews much either...

For instance, I just listened to The Namesake, really enjoyed it, and then just had to listen to Gogol's The Overcoat, since it is so central to The Namesake.

The Overcoat may be the best short story I've ever "read" - I listened to that three times in a row, and didn't add a note to audible.

Heart-Shaped Box was a great, funny and terrifying spin on ghost stories. Nasty, deadly stuff happens in broad daylight. I've got a soft spot for ghost stories, and this one has a wicked edge.

It surprised me, scared me, made me laugh, and I can't wait for more from this talented storyteller. Of course there are flaws, and some easy shortcuts to character development, but I didn't care a bit.

Truly guilty pleasure, and far better than I'd hoped. Keep up the good work, Mr. Hill! The narrator was fantastic, as well, and really did justice to the material.

I was reminded where John Le Carre got his chops. This is a richly satisfying novel on many levels, and really got to the heart of some difficult and beautiful truths. The reading was perfeclty done, as well. highly recommended. Greene has transcended the formula once again.
