In a world where "witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people" (Booklist), it takes a very unusual woman to call it home. By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in Eastern Washington. By night, she explores her preternatural side. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy's found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so- human on more than one occasion. This time she may get more than she bargained for.

Patricia Briggs writes one of my favorite series with her Mercedes Thompson novels. Mercy is a kick-ass strong woman who constantly finds herself in a mess, but gets out of it with courage and intelligence. Of course being able to shift into a coyote doesn't hurt. Add to that the hottest of werewolf alphas competing for her, and what's not to like.

Lorelei King is a terrific narrator. She does such a great job bringing a wide variety of characters to life with her voice. I can't imagine anyone else every portraying Mercy. Pair up King with Briggs' clever writing and you always get your money's worth.

Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over 10 years on the force, she's seen it all - and knows that her survival depends on her instincts. And she's going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire - and suspect in Eve's murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it's up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about - except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

This is one of my all time favorite series. Nora Roberts AKA J.D. Robb has created one of the best and most engaging female leads in the genre, Eve Dallas, and paired her with the most to die for man, Roarke. I have read and listened to this first book in the series many times and still love it.
Susan Ericksen is such a fabulous narrator with so many creative character voices in her wheelhouse that now when I read a book in this series I hear her character voices speaking the roles. And Nora has taken 2 complex characters and woven them into a fabulous pairing that never fails to entertain. I've been completely delighted to watch her develop not only the lead characters but the supporting characters to great depth as the series has progressed. It's got romance, sex, cops, drama, humor, tragedy, victory, human frailty and human strength all rolled into every book. And in a few of them she adds a bit of paranormal too (although Eve won't admit it).
Listeners will truly enjoy watching Eve's evolution from a single-minded, dedicated cop with almost no life outside her work, to that same cop discovering the puzzling mystery of being in love. Along the way she begins to remember pieces of her horrifying past that she has blocked from her memory since childhood, and she struggles valiantly to deal with her past as it is gradually revealed. Her relationship with Roarke is lovely to watch as Eve tries to figure out the "marriage rules". Of course solving her murder cases is always more interesting when Roarke adds his considerable skills to her team as a "civilian consultant".
The entire series is well crafted, entertaining, smart, poignant, and an absolute MUST for your library.

Lilly Yazhi knows all she needs to know about Clay Tahoma. Sure, he’s got a certain appeal befitting his Navajo roots, but she’s not falling for Clay’s silent, “earthy” attractiveness. She certainly won’t make the same mistake as Clay’s ex-wife. Only trouble is, her heart and mind have committed to different resolves.

I really enjoy Carr's Virgin River series. I'd love to go live there if it really existed! I feel like the characters throughout the series are friends of mine now. So I was really looking forward to a book that also had horses, as that's a big love of mine. I enjoyed this book for it's exploration of the relationship between the people and the horses, and for the cultural complexity of the Native American characters.
The complete downer for me was the narrator. Her cadence and inflection were not fluid or natural. She tended to have slight pauses where there shouldn't be any, And for me the biggest detractor is when either a narrator or writer states something inaccurately. In this case, the narrator mispronounces the term "dressage" more than once, which makes anyone who has a clue about horsemanship wince in annoyance. If you're going to narrate a book, please find out how to correctly pronounce words you don't know. I'm listening to the book for the second time, as I wanted to see if my initial impression still held. It does, so if you are a Virgin River series fan you may prefer to read this book rather than spend a credit to listen to it.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

While the premise of the story is interesting, Larson literally drowns you in boring detail. I thought the accounting details were going to put me to sleep while I was driving my car. To me the only really interesting character is the female lead, and she is one messed up gal. But you gotta love the way she gains control of her life and sets her own terms, especially when she nails the bastard who controlled and manipulated her while she was under his "guardianship". Overall though, when your drowning in boring detail and all the names of the characters have 12 syllables that you can't pronounce, it didn't work for me.

I like the writing and narration of this book. I read or listen to several shifter series, and they range from formulaic through pretty decent (this series fits that) to outstanding (Nalini Singh's Psy-Changling series is my all time favorite). This is a good series opener with engaging characters and a believable paranormal world. The characters are strong, and I like the relationships between the pack members. It's credit worthy and enjoyable.

I love the quirks in this book. The male lead won a lottery, but he's really a down to earth cool guy. The female lead has complex family relationships that require so many sacrifices from her, and give you an insight into living with a phobia. It's a lovely testament to the love of family overcoming adversity. As always, well written, good dialogue, strong and interesting characters, and suspense! Great listen!

Crais does an excellent job of developing this relationship between the cop and his dog, who he didn't really want. They both have PTSD, and the story helps you have an emotional insight into how that feels. I really loved this story. It was complex, suspenseful, emotional, and well crafted. Great use of a credit!!

Usually I give Nora's books 5 stars, as I did for the first in this series. This book is good, and certainly continues the story, but I wasn't quite as engaged by it as I was the first book. However the complexity of the storyline as the 3 main characters begin to interact with their ancestors to form a stronger force against evil is intriguing. And I love the continuity of the horse, hawk, and hound in every generation. I also really like how the 4th character, a descendant of the evil wizard, has ties to his own horse, hawk, and hound and and uses his skills on the side of "The Three". Can't wait to see how he and Brenna resolve their issues. It's bound to be explosive, and obviously necessary for them to finally triumph over evil.

OK I really like the shifter/paranormal world Tyler has created in the first 2 books. This book got pretty dark for my taste. I felt like the male lead, Kalen, was strong one minute and a total weakling the next. All the waffling back and forth made it hard to believe he really had the strength to overcome the uber bad guy. And I thought Mackenzie, his mate, was a bit clueless in understanding how important the amulet necklace was for Kalen's protection. I also wasn't a fan of how the uber bad guy could talk to Kalen in his head one minute, but when the plot depended on keeping info secret Kalen could suddenly block him.
I also found it hard to believe the scene of the big battle when "hundreds" of the bat-like sluaugh (sp?) attack just a few shifters and no one except the bad guys dies. Overall this story didn't hold together as well for me as the first two, but I like the series well enough to continue. The next book (#4) has some mixed reviews but #5 looks like a winner.
