  • Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass Look Big, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer

To whom the fat rolls...I'm tired of books where a self-loathing heroine is teased to the point where she starves herself skinny in hopes of a fabulous new life. And I hate the message that women can't possibly be happy until we all fit into our skinny jeans. I don't find these stories uplifting; they make me want to hug these women and take them out for fizzy champagne drinks and cheesecake and explain to them that until they figure out their insides, their outsides don't matter.

I loved this book. The narrator is fabulous, the book is funny, fast paced, and truthful. Great listen.

Lily is haunted by memories of who she once was, and of a person, long gone, who defined her existence. She has nothing but time now, as she recounts the tale of Snow Flower and asks the gods for forgiveness.

I have listened to both "shanghai girls" and "dreams of joy". This title is not nearly as compelling. It is slow paced, and frustrating. Skip it.

  • Zombie Spaceship Wasteland: A Book by Patton Oswalt

Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remembers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, including a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch.

    "Meh"
    Overall

I love Patton Oswalt generally, but this was terrible. It seemed to be mostly stream of consciousness writing with LOTS of obscure references to things in the 80's that I was too young to remember. If you're nostalgic for that time, however, some of this may appeal to you.
