This book had the potential of being something really great. The writing is excellent and the premise had countless possibilities, but the author doesn't explore the multitude of scenarios possible in the utopian world she has created, especially after the main character chooses to live outside the "community" - think of the stories that could have been told of the remaining members and how they coped after his "release." The ending was flat. After giving us such great descriptions of life and characters in this new community, she leaves us to use our own imaginations to complete the story. I think the exploration of characters response to the story was missed. I felt cheated and unresolved after listening to it. The narrator is good and does a pleasant job of characteizations - easy to listen to. I also agree that some of the subject matter would be inappropriate or difficult for the less than mature child. I cannot recommend this book.
This book was recommended to me by my boss. His 10 year old loved it, so he listened to it and told me about it. Great book! I've read other time traveler books but this one was almost like a Clive Cussler underwater adventure with two plot lines intersecting at the very end. The narrator does a good job with German and British accents and even the little girl's character. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a fun, adventurous, and well-written story. It makes me want to read the author's other adult-adventure books. Enjoy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The use of two narrators was done very well. The love story line was somewhat predictable (thus the 4 stars and not 5), but the insight into circus life in the 30's was great. And the ending fit well, even though I didn't expect it. The book had been recommended to me long ago and they were right; it was very good. I have recommended it all of my friends!
As another reviewer said, the hardest part of listening to this book is explaining to the drivers around you why you are laughing so hard! Special note: Hearing Bill Bryson read the book makes it so much better. I can't imagine that reading it could be as funny as hearing his voice with his dry sense of humor. It makes it so much better! I grew up in the 50's and experience much of what he talks about - downtown stores, the introduction of television in the home, chain restaurants and over-heated elem schools. But I literally laughed so hard, I had to pull off the road to get a grip. Great book!
This is a great overview of the "originalists" interpretation of the constitution. Plus, Scalia is such a marvelous and entertaining speaker, it makes the entire listen worthwhile. He has a great sense of humor which helps to make this subject easier to understand. Whether or not your agree with originalists, you will enjoy listening to one of our most colorful Supreme Court justices speak!
