In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King's keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

I appriciated this well balanced essay on gun control. Open discussion without hysteria is what this country needs and this is a good place to start.

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil.

I ordered this book on impulse without knowing much about it. I was shocked that I had not heard of this book before. My uncle was in the African Congo as a minister about the same time. When I brought the book up at a family dinner I was the only one that hadn't read it years ago. I will read it a gain. My daughter is planning go into ministry in Africa soon. This book gives some personal context to the history we have been studying.

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

What made the experience of listening to The Kitchen House the most enjoyable?

I have just recently started listening to books about history and slavery. I think this book did a great job illustrating the balance of power in the antebellum south.

What does Orlagh Cassidy and Bahni Turpin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The tones she used for Lavinia and Belle helped to me to understand the differences in the characters personalities. It goes far beyond the differences in their station and privilege.

This New York Times best-seller is the astonishing life story of award-winning humanitarian Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A deeply respected advocate for free speech and women's rights, Hirsi Ali also lives under armed protection because of her outspoken criticism of the Islamic faith in which she was raised.

Where does Infidel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I rank this at the top of my list. I have recommended this book to several people.

What other book might you compare Infidel to and why?

I have not read another book like this, but I will be reading/listening to Ayaan Hirsi Ali's other book soon.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I don't have a favorite scene. But the reoccurring themes to not take things at face value and the importance of understanding what you are taught are important messages for all of us.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wouldn't recommend listening to this book in one sitting. You periodically need time to process what the author's story means to our lives.

    Any additional comments?

Listening to the author read her own story was very powerful. Her accent and tone added a lot to the experience.
