Content is interesting, but the narrator makes me recall those head-down-on-the-desk b&w films all students are subjected to. Nice for napping in class, which is free, a waste of money tolerating the narration. Advice to Flowers: re-record the book with new narrator!

For 25 years, John E. Douglas worked for the FBI, where had a brilliant and terrifying career getting inside the minds of notorious killers. Written with Mark Olshaker, Law and Disorder is Douglas’ most provocative and personal book yet. In it, he addresses every law enforcement professional’s worst nightmare: those cases where, for one reason or another, justice was delayed - or denied.

Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Joe Barrett is an excellent reader for this genre.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    YES!

    Any additional comments?

These authors are the FBI's original profilers. Smart, gutsy, creative and determined.

He has hunted some of the most notorious and sadistic criminals of our time: The Trailside Killer in San Francisco, the Atlanta Child murderer. He has confronted, interviewed and researched dozens of serial killers and assassins -- including Charles Manson, Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, and James Earl Ray -- for a landmark study to understand their motives. What does John E. Douglas bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoy the credibility John Douglas brings to the table by narrating his own book.

Stella Nickell's small-time world was one of big-time dreams. In 1986, her biggest one came true when her husband died during a seizure, making her the beneficiary of a $175,000-plus insurance payoff - until authorities discovered that Bruce Nickell's headache capsules had been laced with cyanide. In an attempt to cover her tracks, Stella did the unconscionable. She saw to it that a stranger would also become a 'random casualty' of cyanide-tainted painkillers.

If you could sum up Bitter Almonds in three words, what would they be?

I remember this incident, so it was nice to learn more of the background story.

What did you like best about this story?

The interaction between mother and daughter.

    Any additional comments?

The book could have been cut down quite a bit. So much detail re minor characters, I became frustrated. Didn't finish the book b/c it dragged on and on, but had heard enough and was satisfied when I stopped.

Would you ever listen to anything by Greg Iles again?

    Maybe

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator should not have been stuck in a library voice. Had to stop torturing myself.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Only that I pulled the plug.

1800s. San Antonio, Texas: In room 207 at the Longhorn Saloon, in the long shadow of the Alamo itself, a woman renowned for her beauty was brutally murdered. Her killer was never found.

One year ago: In that same historic room, another woman vanished without a trace. Her blood was everywhere... but her body was never recovered. Now: In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies. All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now.

Could be just me ... I absolutely had to stop listening to this book b/c the narrator was so annoying.
I would not recommend this book as I think it's a waste of time and $$$.

What was most disappointing about Heather Graham’s story?

I couldn't finish it b/c the narrator is mediocre.

Would you be willing to try another one of Luke Daniels’s performances?

    NEVER

Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. I found this book creepy - but I don't really know what was going on. Two stars instead of one b/c maybe I just wasn't smart enough to figure it out. Put it down. Money down the drain ...

How could the performance have been better?

I've read books since and can't put my finger on it, but I do remember I didn't care for the narrator.

In 1991, eleven-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped on her morning walk to the school bus. But despite her family's tireless efforts, Jaycee's disappearance remained a mystery. Then, in August 2009, a registered sex offender named Phillip Garrido appeared on the University of California, Berkeley, campus alongside two young women whose unusual behavior sparked concern among campus officials and law enforcement. That visit would pave the way for a shocking discovery: That Garrido was Jaycee Lee Dugard's kidnapper.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I know a good bit of this sad story, and knowing John Glatt was the author, I expected greatness. I never got to the actual "story" b/c the narrator, Randye Kaye, couldn't have been more monotone and full of glee in her voice. I truly felt nearly out of control and considered throwing my iPod across the room. Glatt, Secrets in the Cellar had first-class writing and Gildart Jackson was perfect narrator. Dump Kate and I'll give your books another chance.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Her skip-to-my-loo voice and monotone to boot. What a loser.

    Any additional comments?

My only other comment is that I wish I could block Kaye from any book I may be interested in. She's one of the most annoying narrators I have ever come across.

In the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), girls can become valuable property as plural wives, but boys are expendable, even a liability. In this powerful and heartbreaking account, former FLDS member Brent Jeffs reveals both the terror and the love he experienced growing up on his prophet's compound and the harsh exile existence that so many boys face once they have been expelled by the sect.

What would have made Lost Boy better?

I found the book quite good through the first half. But then I became bored and had to stop before I started screaming at the "Lost Boy." Too much redundancy.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator's voice sounds as if he is or could be the Lost Boy.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to a friend AND an enemy. It's not that super Stephen King scary book I've mostly seen. It's an intelligent police procedural.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Oh, heck, yeah, I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what was just around the corner.

Which character – as performed by Will Patton – was your favorite?

    Mr. Mercedes, of course.

Who was the most memorable character of Mr. Mercedes and why?

Mr. Mercedes is so creepy - but not over-the-top weird.
