  • Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World

The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

Would you listen to Beyond Religion again? Why?

I'll probably listen again out of respect for the Dalai Lama's position and the knowledge that he has given more time than the average citizen to his subject. And I'm sure salient points were missed in my first review.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting advice came from the Tibetan exercises for self-control and listening to others. Descriptions of the Dalai Lama's travels weren't particularly interesting to me.

Which character – as performed by Martin Sheen – was your favorite?

N/A Martin Sheen's narration was a big part of having chosen Beyond Religion. He's an intelligent, exceptional reader.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

The world is taking on some pretty important transitions in this century. I would encourage everyone to read to learn, and read across the lines of religion, politics, finance, nature and conservation and especially history.

Against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad gathers a unique cast of sinners and saints. Leopold Bloom King, our narrator, is the son of an amiable, loving father who teaches science at the local high school. His mother, an ex-nun, is the high school principal and a well-known Joyce scholar. After Leo's older brother commits suicide at the age of 13, the family struggles with the shattering effects of his death, and Leo, lonely and isolated, searches for something to sustain him

    "Kudos to Mark Deakins"
    Overall

Pat Conroy enjoys popularity as a Southern writer and South of Broad exemplifies his considerable power of descriptions and knowledge of the South. But the real master storyteller here is Mr. Deakins with his rich intonations and perfect rhythm in telling a tale.
