"What A Gem!"
I am 3/4 of the way through this book & am completely enjoying it. I was surprised to see that there weren't any current ratings. If you are considering this book, don't hesitate. It's chock full of all kinds of things. Historical fiction adventure mystery, skullduggery, the Opium Wars commentary on colonialism and even some timid Victorian romance. But wait there's more! Most of all it's a story about the first American Popstar, the great Dickens. I am already planning to get "Great Expectations" as my next listen. I can't give this 5 stars as I've not yet read the ending but it definitely has 5 star potential.
If you're interested in taking a step back in time and get a little personal with one of the greatest writers that ever lived get this book!
"Wonderfully entertaining"
Absolutely, especially to historical fiction fans. Humanity at its best & worse no matter the year or clothes. A story that "spellbinds " you from the beginning & doesn't let go until the fox is found. great characters with so many wonderful voices. Excellent narration & the book never seemed too long .
The introduction of the Exodus Jerusalem character, the verbal parry between .Corbett & Bidwell.Matthew arrivung at the Lynch house. The dinner at Lucretia Vaughn's
It would have to be the Jerusalem & Lynch character as a matter of the narrators skill. But Matthew was my favorite by far. His consistently dogged yet level headed quest for the truth. This guy just doesnt give up, he couldn't if he tried.
"Time Travel is Real!!!"
This is the first Stephen King book I have ever read. What a surprise it was! From the first page to the last I was simply transported back to 1958. I am old enough to remember so much of what was written about. A stroll back to a familiar place. Could barely put this down to go to work, errands etc. So for me it made time stand still for a while. Treat yourself this holiday. You wont regret the ride.
The first time
The narrator seemed to be the only one that could have read this book.
This book ran a whole ladder of emotions, going up & down the rungs at any given moment
"a great series"
what can you say about a series that continues to hold your attention hour after hour. what seems like pure make believe becomes real, and a character in Sookie that just keeps her head up and goes. The series is a delight, the narrator becomes an integral part of the series and the story never dies. Keep it up Charlaine!!!
""I am born.""
Wow, was I ever. This was the first Dickens I read "voluntarily". It is well appreciated in my present reading. I know there is another reading of this story on Audible & I am here to say that I couldn't be happier w/ Simon Vance's version. From his "Maser Davey" of Mr Peggotty to his villanous "Copperfield" of Uriah Heap, Mr Vance is up for the duty of telling this increible story. I went to this book after listening to "The Last Dickens", purchashed here on Audible. That book introduced me to the American Superstar that was Charles Dickens. Could you just imagine waiting for these monthly installments in 1850? This book is a flawless study of all that humanity has to offer. Charles Dickens was able to put a masterpiece together in masterful pieces. Treat your spirit to this novel. It will give you the strength of the ages. Some things are simply timeless.
