Born to a Russian family of lower nobility, Xenia, an eccentric dreamer who cares little for social conventions, falls in love with Andrei, a charismatic soldier and singer in the Empress's Imperial choir. Though husband and wife adore each other, their happiness is overshadowed by the absurd demands of life at the royal court and by Xenia's growing obsession with having a child - a desperate need that is at last fulfilled with the birth of her daughter. But then a tragic vision comes true, and a shattered Xenia descends into grief, undergoing a profound transformation that alters the course of her life.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Mirrored World to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version.

Would you recommend The Mirrored World to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book to a woman who understands sacrifice. I don't think that anyone who has not sacrificed for their family will relate well to the characters.

What aspect of Yelena Shmulenson’s performance would you have changed?

She overdoes some of the accents.

Who was the most memorable character of The Mirrored World and why?

    The crazy/vessel of god sister.

  • Winter of the World: The Century Trilogy, Book 2

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who is interested more in historical details than plot structure. I loved his other books.

What could Ken Follett have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I just couldn't relate to many of the characters.

She's a fashion model who has everything: a boyfriend, a career, a loyal best friend. But when a sudden freeway "accident" leaves her disfigured and incapable of speech, she is transformed from the beautiful center of attention to an invisible monster, so hideous that no one will acknowledge she exists.

What made the experience of listening to Invisible Monsters the most enjoyable?

The narrator did an incredible job of creating tone and mood through her use of varied voices.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that the story challenged my normal framework for reality. Not many books have challenged my patterns of thought in such a demanding way.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where the main character first leaves the hospital and goes into the grocery store; the theft of the turkey and the comments of the child in line are telling.

Who was the most memorable character of Invisible Monsters and why?

    The main character.

One of the most famous women of all time, Joan's brief life, spectacular death and mystical visions have no parallel outside of mythology. But this programme makes clear how very real she was to the army she led - and to the enemy she drove from Orleans.

What would have made Joan of Arc, 1412-1431 better?

Hearing more of Joan's voice. Slowing down and developing the details. Focusing more on Joan's life and less on the well know events that I learned in high school.

Would you ever listen to anything by Geoffrey Orme again?

    No

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

It was a dramatization so there was no one narrator, but there should have been more of a play format. The music was also too loud compartive to the voices.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I love Jean of Arc and her legacy. This story DID NOT do Jean justice.

The spring of 1824 is a challenging one for the inhabitants of Paradise N.Y. when a flood devastates the village. But for Nathaniel and Elizabeth Bonner, it's also a time of reunion as their children return from far-off places: Lily and her husband from Italy, and Martha Kirby, the Bonners ward, from Manhattan. Although Lily is nursing her own grief, it is Martha, fleeing a crushing humiliation, who brings with her trouble that will reverberate in all their lives.

What made the experience of listening to The Endless Forest the most enjoyable?

You get lost in the characters' lives and each character's reactions and complexities are believable. You become part of their lives seamlessly.

What about Kate Reading’s performance did you like?

She is spot on with the voices. She moves from one character to the next making them distinct voices without distracting the reader.

    Any additional comments?

Listen to it. Then listen to the rest of the series. You will cry at the end.

Would you listen to The Rose Garden again? Why?

I would listen to the Rose Garden again because it is a bit complex. I would like to hear any details that I may have missed.

What other book might you compare The Rose Garden to and why?

I would compare the Rose Garden to Diana Gabaldon's, Voyager, simply based on setting and time travel. The character and plot action is very different.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I like everytime that Fergel and Eva interact. They are great together in the book.

    Any additional comments?

You will not be disappointed with this book if you are a fan of historical romance. It is well written and not trite in any way.

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel.
