"Good story"
This was a good story though I felt it was too long and drawn out. Finding true love in the middle of everything that was going on was a little far-fetched but didn't detract from the story.
"Sadly not Courtenay's finest"
My favorite author and of course I would read anything he wrote.
The best part is the ending. His stories never leave you hanging, even the ones with sequels.
Humphrey bowers is me favorite reader. He's perfect. He can switch back and forth from male to female and do so many accent perfectly. I'm always amazed at his southern accent which no body can get right. You never get the chara ters mixed up because every one will have a different voice. I could listen to him read anything.
The parrot. Just kidding. Jack. The story is about Jack.
I rolled my eyes more than once and sadly though that it would be the last of his I'd listen to. I thought it was his same old storie in different clothes. Imagine how bad I felt when I found out it WAS the last one I would listen to! I'm so sad he died. Still, dont let this be your first Courtenay's book. Go with The Power of One or the Potato Factory.
"Don't miss this one"
What a good book! What a story! It was so well told. I learned quite a bit from it, too. I liked how she finished the book, too. She tells you "the rest of the story". There's never a dull moment. You'll love the good guys and hate the villians.
"NOT a pity party"
How refreshing to listen to a good story about a family that's no disfunctional. I enjoyed the book very much. They characters were engaging, the reading was good. A few good laughs and a little mystery.
"Dry and boring"
Don't buy this book if you are looking for a story. There is no story. I couldn't even finish the first part. Just beware.
"Good"
The subject matter isn't my cup of tea (family issues) but it moved along nicely and was well read. I liked the characters and it had a good ending and I wasn't sorry to see it end.
"Delightful"
This was a greatly intertaining book. I was instantly engaged. I loved the characters and the outcome. Even had a little twist.
"Excellent"
I enjoyed this book and it was a good history of Japan in the 1900s. It had a good ending and the characters were engaging. Excellent reader.
"Long, boring and never went anywhere"
I struggled to finish this one. First all the characters sounded English. The Dutch, the Japanese (sometimes they had a little accent). Oh, the Prusian did sound Prusian but that was it. Part 1 I couldn't even see a story. Part 2 I started to follow it. I thought, ok, a nice little love story, but that ended and Part 2 embarked on a different stoy that also went nowhere. Then it wraps up in the last 2-5 minutes and not very satifactory.
"soap opera"
I listened to this one immediately after The Rich are Different. The first thing I didn't like was there was a different reader. Both readers were good but I never recovered completely from the change. Also, Cornelius sounded like the "godfather" and I never got used to it. I was disapointed than most of the characters didn't follow on although you do find out what happened to them.
"More inspirational than historical"
Be prepared for it being a little on the syrupy side especially in the last part. The most interesting part was about a woman serving in the army.
