The Persimmon Tree opens in Indonesia in 1942 on the cusp of Japanese invasion and the evacuation of Batavia (Jakarta) by the Dutch. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Duncan is on holiday there, in pursuit of an exotic butterfly known as the Magpie Crow. It's an uncertain, dangerous time to be in Indonesia, and Nick's options of getting out are fast dwindling. Amidst the fear and chaos he falls in love with Anna, the beautiful daughter of a Dutch acquaintance, and she nicknames him 'Mr Butterfly'.

    Corinne says: "An excellent sequel"

What did you love best about The Persimmon Tree?

    This was an edge-of-the-seat story.

What did you like best about this story?

The historical information made it so believable.

What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?

This narrator deserves a 10-star rating. I've never heard anyone able to capture so many dialects so accurately. How the heck does he transition between characters so seamlessly?

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    A real page turner!

    Any additional comments?

Unfortunately, the sexual exploits of the male character were too predictable.

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

    Alan says: "Outstanding"
"One of best I've listened to in ages!"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was a wonderful story of relationships, insight, and the role fate plays in our lives.

What did you like best about this story?

How could you not just love Owen?

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration brought the character of Owen to life! That voice is priceless!

    Any additional comments?

    No disappointments here.

Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were unlikely boyhood friends. Larry was the child of lower middle-class white parents, Silas the son of a poor, single, black mother - their worlds as different as night and day. Yet a special bond developed between them in Chabot, Mississippi. But within a few years, tragedy struck. In high school, a girl who lived up the road from Larry had gone to the drive-in movie with him and nobody had seen her again.

Ann says: "Excellent story, terrific narrator."
"More twists than a Mississippi copperhead!"

What did you love best about Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter?

The story and character development were craftily done.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I haven't stayed up half the night in a long time listening to a book, but this one kept me listening to just a bit more throughout the night.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Can't pick just one.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

More twists than a Mississippi copperhead!

    Any additional comments?

My mother was from Mississippi, and I so fondly recall her teaching my sister and I how to spell it.

The narration by Kevin Kenerly was excellent! What a rich and smooth voice he has.

Keller possesses all the qualities of a professional killer. He's cool, confident, reclusive, icy, and ruthlessly efficient. But this seasoned hit man is also prone to self-doubt as he finds himself caught in the clutches of a mid-life crisis.

Would you listen to Hit Man again? Why?

No. I don't tend to listen to books more than once unless I forget that I listened to them in the first place. This has been known to happen.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh! Can't believe I felt compassion for the character.
