"Boring, unimaginative"
My mind kept wondering while listening to this book - because it is so boring and completely predictable. On top of that, the author spends lots of time describing combat scenes while completely losing the reader (listener). The plot it self is a formula based on terrorists vs. the good guys from s special branch of the US government. Waste of time and money...
"Exceptional"
Jeffrey Archer stands out as one of the few non-formula bestseller authors. This book presents a captivating story which is right up there with Sons of Fortune and other top books by Lord Archer. The story is of course somewhat predictable for anyone who's read Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo or Jules Verne's Mathias Sandorf but entertaining nevertheless.
"Masterpiece"
I loved The Pillars of the Earth and this book is perhaps even better. Excellent writing! I loved the plot and the characters and I particular enjoyed the insight into the medieval economic models - how did the lords, priers, and merchants made their living. Beside the excellent narration, Mr. Follett's dedication to originality deserves praise as well - there are so many formula authors churning out one cookie-cutter book after another and Mr. Follett is a shinning exception!
"Not his usual"
This book must have been a left over from another project. Mr. Flynn has omitted his usual character description or context setting. The story is completely linear and only one thing really happened in the entire story. If "fast pasted" is a code word for shallow and simple, this book is really, really fast pasted. The great narration helps to make the audible book enjoyable but it does not compensate for the poor writing.
