Every morning Boone Daniels is out with the Dawn Patrol: four men and one woman as single-minded about surfing as he is, or nearly. They have real jobs; Boone works as a P.I. just enough to keep himself in fish tacos and in the water. But Boone is also obsessed with the unsolved case of a young girl named Rain who was abducted while he was with the San Diego police.

I came upon Winslow by accident. Wow, what a great author. This guy delivers and just when you think you have things figured out, a rogue wave comes in and knocks you off your feet.
I'm not a surfer, and you won;t have to be one to enjoy Dawn Patrol or it's sequel, Gentleman's Hour. But you will enjoy this story.
I'm a big fan of Michael Connelly amd Joe Wambaugh, but Don Winslow is at the top of his game and I'm happy to be along for the ride.

Whatever happened to Calico Joe? It began quietly enough with a pulled hamstring. The first baseman for the Cubs AAA affiliate in Wichita went down as he rounded third and headed for home. The next day, Jim Hickman, the first baseman for the Cubs, injured his back. The team suddenly needed someone to play first, so they reached down to their AA club in Midland, Texas, and called up a 21-year-old named Joe Castle. He was the hottest player in AA and creating a buzz....

I hope there is redemption in this novel because after 2 hours of listening to what a dirt bag the father was to his son & wife, I had to shut it off
Call me old fashioned, but I'm looking to be entertained, not caught up in an abusive family relationship that I don't care about.
Save your money and download Grishams latest lawyer novel, The Litigators, or his other baseball novel that takes place in Italy and is fun.
Calico deserves to visit the remainder piles Don't be sucked in by a great writer who has run aground on sandbar of self pity.
And by the way, as a listener, we have an obligation to quit a book when it becomes unsufferable, no matter how wonderful the author is!

Quintessential Elmore Leonard, Split Images stars Palm Beach playboy Robbie Daniels. He's the kind of guy who gets away with everything - even murder - until a vacationing Motown cop, Bryan Hurd, starts asking questions. When this millionaire reptile reveals the psychopath beneath his slippery skin, Hurd finds out this is one helluva way for an out-of-town lawman to spend his vacation.

Big Elmore Leonard fan, but this is one of the few times that he doesn't get the job going. Let alone done. It's like he';s working on it, rough draft and forgets to call in an editor Slow moving
Move on to any of Elmores, Rayland, US Marshal novels for a better listen Sorry Elmore, cause you're da man!

The feds want Miami bookmaker Harry Arno to squeal on his wiseguy boss. So they're putting word out on the street that Arno's skimming profits from "Jimmy Cap" Capotorto - which he is, but everybody does it. He was planning to retire to Italy someday anyway, so Harry figures now's a good time to get lost. U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens knows Harry's tricky - the bookie ditched him once in an airport while in the marshal's custody - but not careful.

With the closing of the Harlan County, Kentucky coalmines, marijuana has become the biggest cash crop in the state. A hundred pounds of it can gross three-hundred thousand dollars, but that’s chump change compared to the quarter million a human body can get you - especially when it’s sold off piece-by-piece. So when Dickie and Coover Crowe, dope-dealing brothers known for sampling their own supply, decide to branch out into the body business, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens to stop them.

You'll enjoy Brian D'Arcy James narration of Raylan. Like most of Elmore Leonard's novels, it's the pitch perfect dialog that moves the story along. Your time won't be wasted with overblown descriptions, the fast moving dialog say's it all.

Partners in the Los Angeles Police Department, they’re haunted by terrifying dark secrets of the nightwatch - shared predawn drink and sex sessions they call choir practice. Joe Wambaugh used this book to climb out of the patrol car and into the libraries, movie screens and TV's of America.
Wambaugh was a LAPD street cop when he crafted this great novel of policemen, perps and after work parties. Written in the late 1970's,without the censorship of political correctness we now suffer under, Wambaugh makes you laugh and share the pain.
Hopefully you listen to any of Wambaughs more modern novels of Hollywood Station, but this is where he started and it is worth a brief detour into the 70's to listen.

Keller's a hit man. For years now, he's had places to go and people to kill. But enough is enough. He's got money in the bank and just one last job standing between him and retirement. So he carries it out with his usual professionalism, and he heads home, but guess what?

Hit & Run is one tiresome Lawrence Block novel. Unfortunatly this boring butcher of time takes place almost entirely in the paranoid thoughts and self talk of hit man Keller.
In earlier novels, Keller was entertaining and deadly. In this novel you get beaten up with hours of deathly boring navel gazing by formerly entertaining hit man Keller.
No wonder shrinks have such a high rate of suicide, after attempting to listen to this disaster, I wanted to jump from the Brooklyn ridge.

Grifters! So much promise in a title. Unfortunately this pulp fiction from 60 years ago does not keep up with the novel writing we have come to expect in the 2000's. Do yourself a favor and let this slow moving iceberg slide into the tropics of time and melt away.
    Tedious, slow, dated...

Haunted by the past, John Rain kills to order and leaves no trace, but the death at his hand of an old man has unforeseen complications - and soon Rain is trying to protect not just his carefully preserved anonymity but his own life and those of the people he cares for. A stunning, page-turning reinvention of the hitman thriller, Rain Fall marks the introduction of a compelling new series character and major new thriller writing career.

I knew absolutely nothing about Barry Eisler, but took a chance during one of Audibles reduced rate sales and I'm glad I did.
The simple elegance of Brian Nishii performance of this fast paced novel allows the subtle nuances of Japan to flavor the writing.
