Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human characters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to quote Time, "utterly irresistible."

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Truly inspirational! What small thing could we change in our world if we only had the courage?

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now this sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel.

Would you listen to Dragonfly in Amber again? Why?

Yes, it's truly an escape story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Jamie and Claire Frazier

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Brilliant narration!

    Any additional comments?

Great adventure story. A bit long on the S&M details, and I'm not sure Frank Randal adds anything to the story if you are not into that kind of thing. The rest of the story makes it worth riding out those parts. I read the book decades ago, and I enjoyed Davina Porter's narration even more.

  • These High, Green Hills: The Mitford Years, Book 3

At last, Mitford's rector and lifelong bachelor, Father Tim, has married his talented and vivacious neighbor, Cynthia. Now, of course, they must face love's challenges: new sleeping arrangements for Father Tim's sofa-sized dog, Cynthia's urge to decorate the rectory Italian-villa-style, and the growing pains of the thrown-away boy who's become like a son to the rector.

What did you love best about These High, Green Hills?

I especially love hearing Miss Sadie's stories.

Which character – as performed by John McDonough – was your favorite?

    Father Tim

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and no. Hard to turn off, and yet I wanted it to last forever.

    Any additional comments?

If you've not read Jan Karon's Mitford stories, start at the beginning and be prepared to be swept away. On my most frazzled days, these stories can soothe my soul. These characters become friends almost instantly. Father Tim has had a profound impact on my life. If Mitford existed, with Father Tim still living in the rectory or the little yellow house next door, I’d be arranging for moving trucks right now!

Would you consider the audio edition of Wherever You Go There You Are to be better than the print version?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

While I think Jon Kabat-Zinn's message is critically important to our health and well being in this wild and crazy world. I did however, find the narration so calm and soothing that I had trouble staying focused. I found myself leaving the "moment" he quietly murmured about, and thinking about all the nagging things on my to do list. It was solid evidence that I REALLY need this book, but I have to be present in the moment to HEAR the book if I am to learn anything. I upped the narration speed on my Kindle a bit and it helped. Worth the listen, but maybe in small "moments" instead of your long commute.
