Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Would you try another book from Madeline Miller and/or Frazer Douglas?

    NO

Would you ever listen to anything by Madeline Miller again?

    NO

How could the performance have been better?

I liked the Frazer Douglas but the book was just bad.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Song of Achilles?

I would cut page 1 and stop at the last page.

    Any additional comments?

I feel Audible pushes books and let's the publisher write reviews. New rule never buy a book without 500 or more reviews. This had 10 and had close to 5 stars. What was I thinking? I doubt 500 people will read this book.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

I loved this story. Kate Mulgrew read the best book I have listened to on Audible. She was amazing and really brought the story to life. I felt like I was watching a movie. I run while listening and just got truly lost in the story telling. I can't wait to listen to another Joe Hill story. I sure hope Kate does more of his readings.

Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.
