Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

I was ready to hear an opinion stated in objective terms and what I was continually offered was flavored with enough petty mockery that it caused me to doubt the authenticity of the author's offering. I was disappointed.

The Mechanics and the Mages have been bitter rivals, agreeing only on the need to keep the world they rule from changing. But now a Storm approaches, one that could sweep away everything humans have built. Only one person has any chance of uniting enough of Dematr behind her to stop the Storm, but the Great Guilds and many others will stop at nothing to defeat her.

This is a Romeo and Juliet, coming of age story with little sophistication. Given the quality of plot and characters I expect from Campbell, I was disappointed that this book was marked and marketed as the Juvenile fiction that it is. I feel fooled and foolish for having purchased this book.

Available to listeners for the first time, Sucker’s Portfolio showcases a collection of seven never-before-published works from Kurt Vonnegut, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Short, sardonic, and dark, these six brief fiction stories and one non-fiction piece are consummate Vonnegut with piercing satire and an eye for life’s obscene inanity. Also available for the first time is an unfinished science-fiction short story, included in the appendix.

If you're already in the choir and want to be preached to, this is probably a fair choice. Personally, I found the book immature and tiresome.
