When small-time heroin dealer Jai McDiarmid turns up dead one fine Glasgow morning, no one is that surprised - he'd been sleeping with a drug trafficker's girlfriend and had made himself a lot of enemies - so many, in fact, that Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod doesn't know where to start when she is assigned to the case.

Would you consider the audio edition of Where the Bodies are Buried to be better than the print version?

    Never read the print edition.

What did you like best about this story?

MacLean was the best thing about this story. Her accent make you feel like you are on the scene. She is perfect for this book; perfect for a great many books.

Have you listened to any of Hilary MacLean’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

First time listener but it won't be the last. I would like to see her read many, many more books.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It turned out that way; not a feeling I had going in. But, MacLean makes you want to keep going.

    Any additional comments?

Story starts slow. I was 4 hours in before I became caught up in the action. Stick with it and you will enjoy the listen.

Where does The Woodcutter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Near the top. Reginald Hill is a top mystery writer. The problem with his stories is once you start listening to them, you can't stop.

What other book might you compare The Woodcutter to and why?

Normally I would say the Daiziel & Pasco series but this is way different. Sort of a cross between Ian Fleming and Ian Rankin.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Keeble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not - my loss. Keeble makes the book come alive. He has the accent and diction to make you feel like you are living the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I would not characterize the reaction as emotional. Rather I think of it as one that holds your interest. For example, the central character likes to rock climb but is an accomplished spy, assassin, and financier. Quite a combination of traits.

    Any additional comments?

Once you start listening you will find it hard to stop. I would allow myself several hours to listen once I start the book.

To the public, he’s a hero: a brutal killer who targets sex offenders. To most of London’s police force, he’s the suspect in a gruesome, time-consuming case to be avoided. But to Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan, he’s a murderer - no matter the sins of his victims - and catching him is her job. Assigned to the case with the division’s unreadable new DI, Josh Derwent, young and inexperienced Maeve is determined to prove she has what it takes to make it as a female in the tough world of the London police.

What made the experience of listening to The Reckoning the most enjoyable?

Ms. Coomes is an outstanding narrator and perfect for this story. Ms. Casey is a superb mystery writer and, in combination with Ms. Coomes story telling this story comes alive. One aspect of the performance I did not care for was switching the character that Ms. Coomes is representing between Rob and Mave. There is no difference in the voice so it becomes distracting. It is hard to tell who Ms. Coomes is speaking for. I would prefer that the narrator sticks to representing one character.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Reckoning?

One very memorable moment is when Mave finds Patricia in the attic of a house that Mave and Liv broke into without a warrent. I don't want to give away the story but it will have you on the edge of your seat.

What does Sarah Coomes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

As I said above, Ms. Coomes is at least 50% of the success of this story. She adds the ambiance and, with her accent, you really think and feel like you are listening to Mave. She makes the story come alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It did not make me laugh of cry but it did keep me on the edge of my chair.

    Any additional comments?

Great series. I hope Ms. Casey continues to add to it.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The first three quarters of the book leads you to believe the ending will be predictable and that you understand what is happening. You don't. Also, so many books have a storyline that does not comport with the narrator's style. This one has the right narrator for the right story.

What did you like best about this story?

As I mentioned above, this book is all about the ending. I don't want to give it away so just read (listen) it. You will not be disappointed.

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator is superb. You fell as though you are in England; you are walking the streets; you are hearing the crowds and the traffic; and you are asking the questions.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an emotional reaction but a psychological one. It was great!

Revered mystery writer Josephine Tey is traveling from Scotland to London for the final week of her play Richard of Bordeaux, the surprise hit of the season, with pacifist themes that resonate in a world still haunted by war. But joy turns to horror when her arrival coincides with the murder of a young woman she had befriended on the train ride - and Tey is plunged into a mystery as puzzling as any in her own works.

What made the experience of listening to An Expert in Murder the most enjoyable?

Davina Porter made the listening experience marvellous. She has a tremendous repertoire of voices and accents. When the characters were in Scotland I felt like we were on the streets of Edinburgh.

What was one of the most memorable moments of An Expert in Murder?

A memorable moment is when the female victim returns to the train to collect her belongings. I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the experience or the scene.

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

As I said above, I liked everything about her performance but I especially like the accents.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I don't know if "moved" is the right term but there are many, many exciting scenes.

    Any additional comments?

Superbly written and superbly delivered. If you like crime mystery you will not go wrong with this book.

Five short novels by five masters of military science fiction. It’s a war out there. In these pulse-pounding tales, the best (or worst) soldiers in the galaxy are pitted against powerful aliens on distant battlefields. Never-before-published stories about monsters, deadly combat tech, treachery, and honor.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, This is the best compilation of cyborg and military sci-fi I have yet listened to. I love both and this book puts them together in five exciting yet unique stories.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Five by Five?

I think the most memorable moment was in the first book where the protagonist is about to be crushed by a giant. When I was listening I thought I had bought the wrong book. Based on the first few lines, I thought the books would turn out to be fantasy which I dislike. However, there was a pause when the reader said let me explain how we got to this situation. From then on, the book was complete "on the edge of your seat" excitement.

What about Phil Gigante’s performance did you like?

The narrator was perfect for this series of stories. He has the exact pitch and tenor to make the stories interesting and easy to listen to.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Cyborgs in the 23rd century

    Any additional comments?

I usually don't like compilations but you would miss a great book if you passed this one by.

A killer stalks the city of San Diego, brutally slaying women on the fringes of society. The body of a young woman torn apart in her bedroom makes even the hardened detectives of the San Diego PD's Homicide Unit tremble with disgust and rage. For SDPD homicide detective Jon Stanton, the young woman is more than just another case. His former partner, Eli Sherman, was the original detective assigned to the case - before he was discovered to be one of San Diego's most ruthless serial killers.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Jon Stanton is a reluctant police officer with strong moral fiber and a PhD in Psychology; not a combination likely to make him popular. The department he works in is rife with corruption at the same time a serial killer(s) set up shop in his town. He uncovers the corruption, maintains his integrity despite repeated attempts at compromise, but puts those around him at great risk. It is a fascinating ending for an unusual police story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

yes, with the twists and turns the author wove into a very believable story about an individual who had strong moral conviction and very poor financial security.

Have you listened to any of Wayne Farrell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    no

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book made me not want to shut it off until the end.

But when Ruth Galloway arrives to supervise, she finds the museum's curator lying dead beside the coffin. It is only a matter of time before she and DI Nelson cross paths once more, as he is called in to investigate. Soon the museum's wealthy owner lies dead in his stables, too. At any rate, you will enjoy the game overlaid with the game overlaid with the game and all of it happens on the moon. What is real and what is not? You will enjoy listening and trying to figure out the answer to that question along with the characters in the story.
