"The Great War", as it was known at the time, was also said to be the "war to end all wars." It seized all of Europe and much of the rest of the world in its grip of death and destruction. The first truly modern war, it changed how war and peace would be conducted throughout the remainder of the 20th century and even to the present.

This is a really good lecture series that really left me satisfied that I learned something. I feel that listening to this series left me with very real understanding of what caused the war, what impact the war had on Europe, America and other global impact, and what the consequences of the war were both short and long term. I would have liked to have had some insight into the pandemic of 1918 added, but I really enjoyed listening to this and I learned a lot.

This is a great addition to the Hannah Howell Highlander series. Unfortunately, the narrator sounds like she has a sinus condition. I kept wanting to hand her a tissue and some nose drops. If you can get beyond the narrator, you will like this romance with a wild escape, an endangered child, a vile villain, and a steamy couple.

The First World War laid waste to a continent and altered the political and religious landscape of the West. For a generation of men and women, it brought the end of innocence - and the end of faith. Yet for J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination. Had there been no Great War, there would have been no Hobbits, no Lord of the Rings, no Narnia, and perhaps no conversion to Christianity by C. S. Lewis.

Orson says: "My Tolkien-Lewis students will read this book"

This book is a great listen. I thoroughly enjoyed the material presented and the narration. The in depth study of two of my favorite authors and the impact of WW1 on them, on their generation, on their faith, and on their writing was absolutely riveting. If you like the works of both these authors, I encourage you to listen to this book. I am going to re-read the books just to savor the added depth of insight this book has given me into what both authors experienced in WW1.

Having narrowly escaped the electrifying machinations of Thomas Edison, Books and Braun are looking forward to a relaxing and possibly romantic voyage home. But when Braun's emergency signal goes off, all thoughts of recreation vanish. Braun's streetwise team of child informants, the Ministry Seven, is in grave peril, and Books and Braun must return to England immediately.

The narrator for The Diamond Conspiracy was excellent. I loved the first two books in this series. I found the third to be stretching things a bit far, but the fourth just tore it all together to pieces. Let's just say, I not only had to suspend belief, I had to completely generate a belief system that disallowed mercy and sympathy and approved wholesale slaughter of innocents without repercussion.

The Nazis discovered it. The Allies won the war with it. It conquered diseases, changed laws, and single-handedly launched the era of antibiotics. This incredible discovery was sulfa, the first antibiotic medication. In The Demon Under the Microscope, Thomas Hager chronicles the dramatic history of the drug that shaped modern medicine.

Okay, I know what you are thinking. A history on the discovery of sulfa drugs. Dry and boring. NO! Not dry, not boring and actually interesting. There are quirks and turns in the path of this discovery that are just fascinating. The factors playing into the discovery are intriguing.. The coincidences are amazing. I really enjoyed listening to this. I learned a lot. Like sulfa was discovered before penicillin. And a whole lot more. So try it, you just might like it.

I listened to this while hiking at Big Bend National Park. This book made me want to find me a Polanski and become a National Forest Ranger. It is a great book and amazingly well read. It is a gripping story, and you will find yourself doing stuff to keep from turning it off. Like laying in your tent in the dark, knowing you need to go to sleep, but not doing it so you can listen some more. I actually came back and bought a couple of books that weren't on tape about this subject so I could learn more. Awesome! Even if you are not particularly into National Parks, history, or the Forestry Service, this is a good listen with suspense, fear, intrigue, political machinations, shenanigans, fire, and salvation.

Evil is most assuredly afoot - and Britain’s fate rests in the hands of an alluring renegade... and a librarian. These are dark days indeed in Victoria’s England. Londoners are vanishing, then reappearing, washing up as corpses on the banks of the Thames, drained of blood and bone. Yet the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences - the Crown’s clandestine organization whose bailiwick is the strange and unsettling - will not allow its agents to investigate. Fearless and exceedingly lovely Eliza D. Braun, however, with her disturbing fondness for dynamite, refuses to let the matter rest...

The story of Captain D. Michael Abrashoff and his command of USS Benfold has become legendary inside and outside the Navy. Now Abrashoff offers this fascinating tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas. When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of the Benfold, a ship armed with every cutting-edge system available, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity.

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

Okay, first this is a wonderfully written, fantastically imagined steam punk novel. The world may be based on the Victorian Age, but it is way beyond anything Victoria knew! Gail Carriger writes a great story that turns several ideas on their head. The whole series is just fascinating! Emily Gray narrates the tale very well. Give this a try. It is really hard not to laugh out loud while listening though, so be careful.
