Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Pamela Murphy says: "COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN"
    "Great Book!"
    Overall

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The narration is superb! I found the characters were interesting and believeable, and the story was compelling. I was sorry to hear of the author's untimely death--- kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Years ago, the day before Ellie moved from Georgia to California, she and her best friend, Nolan, sat beneath the Spanish moss of an ancient oak tree where they wrote letters to each other, and sealed them in a rusty old metal box. The plan was to return 11 years later and read them. But now, as that date arrives, much has changed. Ellie, bereft of the faith she grew up with, is a single mom living in a tired apartment trying to make ends meet. Sometimes she watches television to catch a glimpse of her old friend - Nolan, now an NBA star, whose terrible personal tragedies fueled his faith and athletic drive in equal measure.

Would you try another book from Karen Kingsbury and/or January LaVoy?

    No.

Would you ever listen to anything by Karen Kingsbury again?

    No.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment... the reviews and promos were misleading. This book should be categorized as Christian Lit-- not a genre I enjoy reading unless I'm focused on Bible study.

When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her London apartment to her twin nieces, Julia and Valentina. These two American girls never met their English aunt; they only knew that their mother, too, was a twin, and Elspeth her sister. Julia and Valentina are semi-normal American teenagers - with seemingly little interest in college, finding jobs, or anything outside their cozy home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with an abnormally intense attachment to one another.

    Michele says: "What a waste"
    "Disappointing"
    Overall

Although this book grabbed me from the beginning, it took a weird and sinister turn about two-thirds into it. It's certainly an interesting idea for a story, but it led me down a trail that I just didn't want to go, so I turned it off and deleted it from my playlist. I'm sorry I wasted a credit on this one.

Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army. And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

    Overall

I've been a great fan of the Outlander series but Echo has left me cold. This book served to introduce a number of what could become interesting story lines, but none were adequately explored , much less developed. Let's face it, Ms. Gabaldon, Lord John is just not that interesting! I'm definitely not buying the Lord John-Claire marriage deal. Come on! The Claire I know and love would have chosen prison over marriage to that arrogant jerk any day! An imprisoned Claire would have been infinitely more interesting than the bedroom scene with Lord Milktoast! Ms. Gabaldon has let her readers down with this latest edition of the Jamie-Claire saga. The sudden ending with so many unresolved and unexplained issues left me sad, confused, and frustrated instead of wanting more.

When Hackberry Holland became sheriff of a tiny Texas town near the Mexican border, he'd hoped to leave certain things behind: his checkered reputation, his haunted dreams, and his obsessive memories of the good life with his late wife, Rie. But the discovery of the bodies of nine illegal aliens, machine-gunned to death and buried in a shallow grave behind a church, soon makes it clear that he won't escape so easily.

    Richard says: "Dynamic Duo"
    "Another Burke-Patton Winner!"
    Overall

The characters and places come alive with Burke's prose and Patton's many voices. I hope to enjoy more of Hack's and Pam's adventures!

The Fiery Cross is Diana Gabaldon's fifth novel in her award-winning Outlander series, featuring 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall.

    Overall

Although I prefer unabridged books and don't want to miss one word of the Jamie-Claire story, I enjoyed this production. Ms. James has a fine voice and represents both Claire and Jamie very well.

  • Swan Peak: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

Swan Peak finds Detective Robicheaux far from his New Iberia roots, attempting to relax in the untouched wilderness of rural Montana. He, his wife, and his buddy Clete Purcell have retreated to stay at an old friend's ranch, hoping to spend their days fishing and enjoying their distance from the harsh, gritty landscape of Louisiana post-Katrina.

    Deborah says: "Christmas/Birthday in July"
    "Will Patton rocks!"
    Overall

The story line is not as strong as some of Burke's other novels, such as Tin Roof, but Will Patton's narration makes it interesting, entertaining and difficult to put down! Will's ability to give each character such a distinguishable voice, especially Clete, makes this a best seller in my book.

Adam Chase has spent the last five years in New York City trying to erase his worst memories and the scorn and abandonment of his family. Then a phone call from his best friend awakens in him a torrent of emotion and pain. Having left North Carolina and its red soil for good, he never thought returning would be easy - and being remembered as a murderer doesn't help much.

    Donald says: "Best Audiobook Ever"
    "Down River"
    Overall

The plot is weak; characters are shallow; dialogue is trivial; and it's tiresome to listen to. Don't waste your time!

This is the story of William "Skip" Sands, CIA, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong, and the disasters that befall him. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert and into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, this is a story like nothing in our literature.

    MadMadeleine says: "Moby Redux"

I'm surprise that Will Patton didn't read himself to sleep with this one!

A troubled young woman breezes into Detective Robicheaux's hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana. She happens to be the daughter of his friend: a friend he witnessed gunned down in a bank robbery, a tragedy that forever changed Robicheaux's life.

    Deborah says: "Breathtaking"
    "Best Yet"
    Overall

I am listening to this novel for the second time and continue to enjoy the wonderful characterization and excellent narration. Will Patton's many voices bring these incredible characters to life, especially Monarch and Clete! His soft southern voice is music to my southern ears. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of Dave.
