Well written and inspite of being only the next book in the series, this one wraps things up better than book 4 where we were left hanging, screaming for book 5 so we could find out what happens. Well after you read book 5 you'll know.
Book 5 isn't perfect. Some actions sequences are less than what I would have expected compared to those in previous books but others were better, and we are left wondering if there will be whole new stories to come just expanding on these events.
This is a good read and well worth your time.
Don't buy this book! I really liked book 1 but this is like pulling teeth. All kumbayah and touchy feely social "if we only get to know each other we will all get along" BS. I live in a real world and I like my characters based in real life even though it may be 2 or 3 hundred years in the future. This is want-a-be nonsense and other than the action, most of the book was like a bad sermon.
This book was a very good read. Sometimes funny, lots of action and space opera. Not always consistent but it works. Unfortunately don't get your hopes up. The second book is all platitudes and Kumbayah drivel. The whole premiss is the problem with the middle east in a nut shell. This author I'm sure believes if they would only understand each other they would immediately embrace and live in peace. Yesterdays enemy is immediately friend just by a few words. The space opera also becomes less and less believable as the books go on. My advice is read book one, hope you enjoy and don't waste your credits on book 2. I'm sure not going to get book three until I see reviews that say he's back to story and not platitudes. Bullies are bullies, loving them doesn't stop them from bullying weaker targets when no one is watching. Integrity is doing whats right when no one is looking, Bullies don't have integrity and can't be trusted.
The first three books were entertaining. Nothing original or complex but entertaining. Yeah I thought the previous books were a little contrived but this book is just horrible. Each step of the way, this so called former Navy SEAL team commander makes dumber and dumber mistakes and his colleagues drop like flys. His ideas on time don't mesh with any consistent theories and the action is forced. Why???? I can only think he was contracted to write a fourth book and was trying to get out of the contract by writing a mess-ter-piece.
The best word for this book is forced. It's well written but style if only part of a book. It is not internally consistent and the societies are too unbelievable and the populations described in the acceptance trials are not consistent with the overall population numbers of each clan. I liked the book enough to finish it but I'm not wasting my money buying the next in the series.
Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite writers, but in these books, he seems to be giving his cowriter too much room to screw it up. Don't get me wrong, this is a must read for all Ender readers and its pretty good. But here's the main issue, although all of his books are a little loose with the science, in these three books, science is thrown out the window in places to add drama. There is plenty of Drama with the bugger invasion without upsetting readers who recognize when the science if off.
The books are great and I look forward to the next set where Mazor confronts the Bugger fleet but there are some inconsistencies you won't find in Cards earlier Ender books. Also, most of the narrators add to the book but some of the narration is overly dramatized and it can be a bit annoying.
Story line had potential but... The Author has no concept of large scale action, strategy, combat or anything else that would have made these books readable. The story lines go from allowing the Characters to mature and then reverts to stupid people beyond belief and nothing is consistent. First there are millions of aliens with 200 plus iQs on an indestructible ship then only thousands of stupid incompetent lizards?
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

Obviously an "early" Hamilton. It reads smoothly and the narrator is pleasant, but he's still learning to develop his plots. This isn't the epic thriller you will come to love in the star flyer wars in the Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained series or the Void Series but you'll grow to like the characters and there's pretty good action mixed in to keep action junkies like me happy. If you like his style in his later books read this series and if you give it time it will grow on you, if you're not sure or a new reader of Peter F Hamilton, his later books are his best and these are simply good so whatever you do don't put these down and leave Hamilton until you've tasted the good stuff.
It's been a while since I've come across a writer of space opera's I've found interesting. I may not have believed his premiss about the new fleet tactics and lack of command obedience he had to overcome when he took command of the fleet but in true SciFi form if you dispell or forgive the premiss, the rest is consistent and very interesting and action packed. Once I got into this first book in the series, I finished all the rest in less than 2 weeks. I found these a very good read. Can wait until the next in the follow up series comes out in May.
I bought "Hounded" on one of Audibles sales based entirely on its 4+ rating. But what could a book about a modern day Druid do to keep your interest??? It's great. Its funny, its original, its action packed, it develops its characters enough for you to actually come to think of them as people you'd like to know, simply put its the best new series I've read in years and his dog is hillarious. Get Hounded and I think you'll be hooked.
