  • War Stories: Operation Iraqi Freedom

As an embedded journalist in Iraq, North got a soldier's-eye view, often while under fire, of what the mainstream media failed to report. A decorated combat veteran, North watched Operation Iraqi Freedom with trained eyes unmatched by other journalists. What he witnessed compelled him to challenge post-war critics of the operation for their uninformed and deceptive views.

I was always looking for an excuses to listen to this book. It was excellent and I can't recommend it highly enough. You can almost feel the sand on your face during the storms.

Rising out of the Nevada canyons, Utopia is a theme park so technologically advanced as to be awe-inspiring. But serious mishaps are starting to cause concern, and things turn from bad to worse when a group of mercenaries infiltrates the park's computerized infrastructure, holding the entire park hostage. The engineer who designed the park now must find a way to save it.

I must be missing something as everone else seems to love this book except me! The writing is good, the descriptions are intricate. Maybe that's the problem. There isn't enough action or excitement to fill 20 hours. The characters - with the exception of Georgia and Theresa - are not very likeable and certainly unlovable.

There are much better thrillers out there.

If you like Dave Barry, then this is the book for you. If however you were expecting to learn anything about Japan, give it a miss. The first 45 minutes are Dave Barry getting to the airport. The first 30 minutes of that is a discussion of the US auto industry.

I am struggling to finish this book in the hope that Dave makes it to Japan.

  • Accidental Playboy: Caught in the Ultimate Male Fantasy

Accidental Playboy is the hilarious, erotic, and provocative memoir of a sensitive post-modern man who stumbles into the dream job of a lifetime. When Playboy magazine tapped Leif Ueland to report on its nationwide search for the Playmate of the Millennium, he was the ultimate confused American male. A self-professed nice guy, he was the last man to be on Playboy's roving audition bus, never mind its official reporter. And yet, something deep within his psyche leapt at the opportunity.

I got 3/4 the way through and couldn't finish it. The author spends most of his time complaining to the reader and his therapist (and anyone who will listen) about how difficult it was for him to be on the bus. You are on a Playboy bus, get over yourself! It's really kind of pathetic and thoroughly boring. Save your book credit for something better.
