Humans live in landscapes of make-believe. We spin fantasies. We devour novels, films, and plays. Even sporting events and criminal trials unfold as narratives. Yet the world of story has long remained an undiscovered and unmapped country. It's easy to say that humans are "wired" for story, but why? In this delightful and original book, Jonathan Gottschall offers the first unified theory of storytelling. He argues that stories help us navigate life's complex social problems.

What would have made The Storytelling Animal better?

I have a deep, longstanding curiosity about story. This book did nothing to feed that thirst.

What could Jonathan Gottschall have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I feel this book laid out all the precepts but never delivered on the marketing. Maybe thats the brilliance of a story that its physics can't captured.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Its length

Physician and biochemist Cate Shanahan, MD, examined diets around the world known to help people live longer, healthier lives - diets like the Mediterranean, Okinawa, and Blue Zone - and identified the four common nutritional habits, developed over millennia, that unfailingly produce strong, healthy, intelligent children and active, vital elders generation after generation. These four nutritional strategies - fresh food, fermented and sprouted foods, meat cooked on the bone, and organ meats - form the basis of the Human Diet.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deep Nutrition?

This is an important book, but it is not for the casual reader.

Did Eliza Foss do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She is the first reader i had to speed up...she read waaaay to slowly for me - the speed up was disconcerting but i wanted to finish in 2018.

    Any additional comments?

The PDF was like the book - i want a summary of the Summary.

At a time when self-awareness matters more than ever, Insight is the essential playbook for surviving and thriving in an unaware world.

Where does You Are a Badass at Making Money rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    top 5%

What was one of the most memorable moments of You Are a Badass at Making Money?

That is was real, relatable and simply shared

What does Jen Sincero bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her genuine emoting and animation 'should' be the standard for almost ALL Audiobooks. The narrator is CRITICAL and how better than the author. I just returned THE FOUR HOUR WORK WEEK because the narrator felt like an over RedBulled used car salesman from 1976

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

Ask me when i implement and change my life

    Any additional comments?

I appreciate she took the time to write then deliver her own great audiobook. I will be purchasing far less audiobooks if the author is not the reader.

What did you like best about Becoming Wise? What did you like least?

Ms. Tippet is a deep thinker and this comes through

What didn’t you like about Krista Tippett’s performance?

If you are expecting her show ON BEING i would not try this in Audio form. It is too structured in its delivery, too monotone.

Did Becoming Wise inspire you to do anything?

Listen more carefully to the samples Before i purchase the audio version of a book.

    Any additional comments?

I know she will ever Re do this book, but if i were to buy it again it would Only be as a printed book.

You have to hang on a bit to the few etherial parts - but she warms you so just go. I have given 5 copies so far to fiends who are just 'stuck' and all the usual self help books are not living them the kick they need.

Why do some products get more word of mouth than others? Why does some online content go viral? Word of mouth makes products, ideas, and behaviors catch on. It's more influential than advertising and far more effective. Can you create word of mouth for your product or idea? According to Berger, you can. Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

Mark Twain once observed, "A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on." His observation rings true: urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus public-health scares circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas (business people, teachers, politicians, journalists, and others) struggle to make their ideas "stick". In this indispensable guide, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds draw their power from the same six traits.

What would have made Made to Stick better?

    Hiring a producer.

    1. The voice sounds like a bad 80's AM DJ who pushes too hard all the time. A flat read would have improved my ability to get to the content.

Would you be willing to try another one of Charles Kahlenberg’s performances?

    NO!!!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Made to Stick?

I would have modified the copy to support that this is an AUDIBLY read book - how hard is it to change a few references - to show us the producer was in the room.

  • The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism

What if charisma could be taught? For the first time, science and technology have taken charisma apart, figured it out and turned it into an applied science: In controlled laboratory experiments, researchers could raise or lower people's level of charisma as if they were turning a dial. What you'll find here is practical magic: unique knowledge, drawn from a variety of sciences, revealing what charisma really is and how it works. You'll get both the insights and the techniques you need to apply this knowledge. The world will become your lab, and every person you meet, a chance to experiment.

Would you try another book from Olivia Fox Cabane and/or Lisa Cordileione?

Firs the best part of this book - the title - great title!However... I ignored what many reviews said - but its true - this book constantly refers to the lessons - from the print version - but the audio or the website has no support for the lessons. So you are left with a big bag of lessons and points in every chapter to act on right away - ( the author attempts to guilt you into doing the lessons - and thats fine - IF the format of audio book took that into consideration.)Different formats need specific producers. You will hear over and over " just look at the lesson below and start now..." as you are driving down the highway. The reader read a verbate of the book - how she did this knowing the use of her reading seems beyond me. But thats a small irritant compared to the book in any form. I have found great inspiration and life changing movement from many 'self help' books. This is not one of them, It has every overused generalized cliche from feel your angel wings to strut like a general. And I lost count at 147 points you should try and use every day.. I needed a book of crib notes for the book.It respectfully has a few good points in chapter 8 - that should be THE CHARISMA LEAFLET. But I had to wade through HOURS and HOURS of superlative drivel to get there. Its unfair to ask Audible for a refund but I would love the author to personally write me a check for the cost of the book and the cost of my time.

What do you think your next listen will be?

IF the author goes back to square one, started from chapter 8, sticks to the topic and goes MUCH deeper, and more authentically and then cuts out ALL the self help 101 - i would consider it. But with a title like this and then to deliver the kitchen sink of beginners self help was very iratating .

How could the performance have been better?

    It should not have occurred

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Pain, disappointment etc., As my nephew said about a bad movie " Well thats ( in my case) 12 hours i'll never get back"

    Any additional comments?

Please Audible - make sure the contents are specifically supported in the audio format, I have never written a negative review of a book here or on Amazon - but this book needs serious curation at many levels.
