As much as I love to expand my brain by listening to books like this, I find most of them so boring I can't seem to focus long enough to learn anything. This book however did a great job at keeping things interesting enough to keep my focus, but without getting into a level of sensationalism that has destroyed cable news journalism over the past decade.
I also love how the author points out how both sides have helped cause harm to the political discord in this country. He doesn't stop at just throwing around accusations. There are real solutions here as well. This book is strongly recommended. I'm sure I will listen to it again when I am mentally ready for something this heavy. It seems like the kind of thing that could be listened to many times over and over again with each time the reader picking up new info missed every time before.
Highly recommended, but be ready to grab something light after.
With the third book I had hope that things would get more exciting. Sadly this was not the case. I am not saying this book is bad. There were parts of it that I enjoyed. With the entire series I loved the links to actual history and how the author comes on at the end and tells you where real history and his book differ. At times it felt that that the author was trying too hard to make it fit into the whole Steampunk style. So although I enjoyed the book, I would have to say that the entire 3 book series is nothing more than average. But it is still good enough to buy if you are waiting for one of your favorite authors to come out with something. This is a gap filler between better stories.
Ok, sure I listen to a ton of audiobooks due to having a job that takes zero brain cells. But when only a few weeks later I can't remember a single detail about a book? That is a bad sign people. It tells me that although it didn't annoy me in any way, it also did not interest me at all either. This might be a good book to go to sleep to. I just might give it a few more listens and test this theory out.
Although I can't honestly point to any one or two specific elements where this story went wrong, I can say it just never grabbed me. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that exciting either. The historical elements did help and the author did a great job on melding history with fiction. This however would be a great choice for when you are waiting for one of your favorite authors to come out with one of their books. I don't regret this book at all. It was good. It just wasn't great. This was just an average story for an average day.
I thought that although the story was miles above Twilight I still was still left feeling that it received way more hype than it deserved. The character at times came across as a weak minded little drama queen when what the story needed was a little more Joan of Arc strong. With all three books I was left wishing she was more like Lyra Belacqua from His Dark Materials and less like Bella from Twilight.
Other than a weak main character, this could have been an amazing story with several layers of depth. The political message underneath is very well done and gives these three books the element that makes it a worthwhile read.
With a stronger lead character, this could have been a perfect tale instead of just a worthwhile read. It is good, but it could have been great.
This story is no Dresden Files, but it is still very well written and performed. I do at times find the main character to at times come off as an overly dramatic little whiner. Thankfully this doesn't happen often enough to ruin the story. But I was left wishing she had as much backbone as say Lyra Belacqua of His Dark Materials. Other than that this story has many layers, twists, and turns.
The reader does a good job of not just reading the book, but performing it. She is able to use a different enough voice for each character that it makes things really easy to follow. I also think that even if you have the time to read the printed version, it would add more entertainment value to read along with Carolyn.
If you are a fan of Twilight this might be a little too much for you. This one actually has things like plot, story development, subtext, and depth. Of course if you are interested in growing your braincells, this is a perfect book to use as the next step. Do I even need to say "Still a better love story than Twilight?"
I think Jim Butcher and James Marsters have ruined all other Audible books for me. I am left comparing every book I listen to by those amazing works. That being said I think this story is well written and the performance is pretty good. As much of a fan as I am of sci-fi books, movies, and tv shows, most audiobooks just do not work for me. So even though this book is not an all time favorite, it still must be pretty good since I didn't hate it and will be buying the other books in the series.
If you enjoy His Dark Materials this is a must buy.
I started having problems following along when I noticed that he does the female characters with the same voice he does several of the male characters. This along with his reading showing as much emotion as any of the robotic villains in the Doctor Who series left me with no ability to remember a single thing about the story halfway through part 3 of book one. I have never been left so clueless about a story as I was after trying to listen to this one. You would think that with such a high profile book, they could get a better reader. He might have been ok if only given a few of the male characters, but they really need to get a woman to re-record the female character parts at least to save this thing. I had such high hopes for these books and now I can firmly say that I will not be listening to any of them until they get a better reader. I seriously wonder if these books are any good or is it just hype?
So I go to purchase this book and the app tell me it is already in my library. Great! So I go to my library and it isn't there. I try searching under author, title, etc. Nothing. I go into settings to make sure I show all titles. It says it is showing all. So I go on to this site on my desktop computer. Yep, still claims I paid for it and it is in my library. So I re-boot my phone thinking maybe a fresh re-boot will let me listen to the darn thing. NOPE! Is still does not show in my library on my app. So, I paid for it, yet can't listen. It claims that it is in my library everywhere except where I click to actually listen. Maybe I should go back to torrents? At least I can find a book to listen to it then!
With a story that has such a rabid fan base, you have to be careful not to tick people off. Sadly I did not notice that it said "Abridged" until I had already purchased it. I listened to it with the hope I would not notice what was missing. This was not the case. The cast came off sounding cartoonish and goofy like a 1920's radio drama instead of maintaining the more mature feeling this epic tale deserves. Maybe it was recorded several decades ago back when audio books were done with 20 cassette tapes? It sure sounded like it. This story deserves better.
